454 starter issues

I bought this starter today after I broke all the plastic crap around where the purple wire hooks up to the solenoid. The problem I'm having is that the starter gear and starter its self sits right up on the flex plate, to the point where I'm not even thinking of turning the key at all. Has anyone else had this problem? I've read several threads where people just bolt them in no problems, no shims either. Should I just take it back and get another one?

I try to do good with this truck but the "no good deed goes unpunished" kicks me in the rear all the time.

mine bolted straight in without no issue the only issue I wrapped mine because the first one after awhile wouldn't turn if hot had to let it cool down. But this new one wrapped I haven't had no problem and have been daily driving it for over a month

Re: 454 starter issues

I don't have any pics and I just finished getting all cleaned up. The starter looks like the whole thing needs to slide to the rear about 1/4" to 1/2". The gear itself is still meshed with the flex plate. I spun the crank by hand and you can hear the gear spinning and the flex plate rubs a bit on the starter.

did you shim it? You usually have to shim starters to get the teeth to mesh. I run a BBC starteron mine, and had to shim it. Is yours an offset bolt pattern, or straight?

Its offset like stock. It bolts up fine. I don't think a shim or even 5 will fix how close it is to the flywheel. It needs to move back about 1/4" or so. The flywheel rubs on the starter right where the gear retracts in the starter.

Those of you that bought your 454 starter from AutoZone, what part number did you get? I got the DL9990S.

Re: 454 starter issues

Check the distance from the bolt to the opening on your old starter. Its' possible you just have the wrong starter. Boxed wrong, whatever. That one sure ain't gonna work, nor will shims help based on your pic.

Looks like the wrong starter or manufactured wrong. I've put in three '96 454 starters and all are a bolt in (no shim required) application.

I took it back to Autozone and compared it to another refurbished one and a brand new unit. The used one is identicle to mine. The new one has a completely different "nose cone", or whatever you call it. It easily clears the flywheel now. The teeth were still meshing with the flywheel teeth though just like before. I ended up drilling the holes out slightly bigger and now it clears just fine. I have about an 1/8" space between them now. Cranked it over about ten times and it works great so far. I did try to shim it but not even close.

I really hate this truck sometimes, I really do.

One more thing I noticed between the Autozone refurbished one and brand new one is the refurbished one was in fact much smaller than stock, but the new one was even smaller than that.
