4L80E: Converting a 2x4 to a 4x4

I know I need to change out the output shaft, but is there anything else that I need to change??

As for the shafts, does anyone know where I can buy the shaft by itself?

Reason being is that I found (2) 4L80E's here locally for $300 a piece, but they are 2WD versions. It seems like a good deal.

Thanks,

2 big things. Same things we talked on the phone about.

4x4 shaft. No big deal there.
Now. If you have a 1996 or OLDER (lube line ports right next to each other), you MUST have an output shaft that HAS 2 LUBE holes in it. I should probably put up some pics.
If you have a 1997 or NEWER trans you want an output shaft with NO lube holes in it. The 1997 or newer trans has the lube ports approx 10" apart.
That's issue one.

Issue 2.
On the planetary that houses the roller clutch, there is supposed to be a reluctor wheel. If you remove that rear speed sensor, look inside there and there should be a toothed wheel. This is the "tone ring". I'm 99.9999% sure you WILL have that tone ring on the 2WD units. 4x4 units you may not have that tone ring. You need this tone ring to run the aftermarket controllers.

Does that help? Let me know if I answered it correctly, if not, break it down for my dumb self:lol:

So if I have this correct:

- I can use a 2002 unit with the stock 6.0L harness, but the stock ECM will control it (not as nicely as the TCI unit)
- If I don't have the reluctor wheel, I cannot run the TCI unit the tranny is rebuilt.
- If it DOES have the reluctor wheel, I can get the TCI unit from the get-go
- With the input shaft I'm getting from you, the only big adaptation components I need are the 3/4" adapter plate, crossmember, and modified x-fer>tranny brace.
- If I use a 2002 unit, and I don't have lube holes in the output shaft......I'm good.
- Whenever I have the unit rebuilt, I want the 34 element sprag and the TransGo kit installed.

Now if I was to buy an extra 4L80E to learn about rebuilding transmissions, where does a person buy a stock 4x4 output shaft?? I can only seem to find the 27 spline conversion shafts.

I appreciate your knowledge, I'm writing all of this down so you don't have to repeat yourself.

I know we talked about that, but curious if there were any small details I was missing.

Thanks again!!

I guess if I read the 33 page post more closely in your forum, it would have covered this.

Sorry.
