Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Hey guys,

thanks for the input, and just to be clear, I wasn't having a pop - I am sure there are going to be snags especially when people make stuff in their garage!!!

As for the black RTV, I only black RTVd the transfer case - stock adaptor connection. I didn't have the gasket and the RVT was what you suggested in the PM I sent - thanks again for the response.

As for the JSM adaptor, I put a thin film of blue RTV around the seal (threadlocker as opposed to sealant) and the same in the bolts holding the plate onto the transmission.

The stock adaptor went in with the little gasket that it came with.

I attached the transfer case with the black RTV.

Did I mess up?

Rear cross member kit? Searching.............

Nevermind. I got the controller installed in the center console today. It won't fit underneath the console as it's too wide. I ran all the wires - all that's left is to splice a few wires into the ECM harness and I'm done. Looks like the wires aren't long enough to reach the glovebox, so I'm going to have to extend them.

I place mines here, didn't have to extened any of the wires, the wire even reach the brake pedal switch. Its tight in there, so its not going to move.

Quickstop,
Take out the bolt that won't go all the way in and compare it to another bolt closely.
Check that the Thread Pitch / Teeth Per Inch is the same by holding the threads together.
Sometimes bolts get mixed in at the factory.
Just check before you tighten it anymore.
It may be the bolt size is the same but the thread pitch / teeth per inch is off and causing it to bind on the way in.

Yep, that is why I visually check every single bolt that I ship with my stuff with a pitch gauge before it goes out. Because most folks aren't going to check things like that before they do an install... I have a rear propshaft bolt on my desk that felt lighter when I pulled it out of the box and it was a grade 8.8 instead of a 10.9. That way I know beyond a doubt that I sent the right fastener unless the person has something exotic going on.

They are all the same black oxide hex head bolts - it was the JSM adapter. After the dremel was at it, it went in ok.

Now I need to get the controller in. I'm kinda nervous as I don't have the engine/exhaust in and am worried about installing something in the wrong place - guess we'll see.

Nice (and FAST!) work mrweelr!

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

My 4L80E has a new home

DSC00042.jpg

However, the install is not without it's issues.

The tubular cross member has holes on the passenger side of the truck....

DSC000401.jpg

But on the driver side, the holes are way too big...

DSC00039.jpg

And how are you supposed to get access to the nut/bol to secure the cross membert - do I have to grind the frame?

DSC00041.jpg

The ears seem to stick out a long way on the 80 here (pass side)

DSC00043.jpg

also on the dvr side...The brass nut is on the M10 bolt that George Blake included in his kit with the spacer, but the engine mount holes are 3/8 16 UNC - do people just swap the bolt out? It's about 6 inches long so I may just get some studding as I can't find any that size very easily.

DSC00044.jpg

On the PCM harness, I have the main GM socket to the trans, the TSS and VSS connections and the RS 232 port for the controller/compyer interface.

There is also a two pin weather proof connector on there which doesn't appear in the instruction manual. Any ideas that this is? Pic to follow. It is attached to a white multi coloured cable.

Are you guys actually unbolting/removing the shifter grommet or punching a hole through the rubber to push the harness through? I want to make sure the solution is airtight and nothing is kinked. Any more pics would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Also, which route did you go? Grommet removal or just punch another hole. It seems awfully tight in there.

Finally, what is the other cable in there - is that to the steering column? Where does it route through? My steering lock isn't working and I am hoping that the cable is only slightly bent somehow.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Crossmeber goes on TOP of the frame, just as the stock one did not underneath as you show.

The ears should have been cutoff before the install, just as a 700 ears are cutoff from factory.

It was late so I only mocked it up but that is re-assuring to know.

I can still cut them off, I just didn't have the TC inspection cover here and have been a bit grind happy recently.

Thanks Jeff!

I had a few other questions - any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

The long bolt should be 3/8 as you indicate, GM mixed and matched metric and sae. If you were supplied a metric bolt that is wrong and won't work 10mm is slightly larger, doubt you would get it started if you did you would mess some things up.

For the grommet I split them and cut the metal ring, you can use some RTV to seal everything back up if you wanted.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

I got your post just in time - was on the way to the tool store to get a metal saw for the cables - RTV was how I was thinking of doing it. Thanks mate!

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Has anyone got a pic of the shifter cable connecting to the selector in the truck and also to the side of the trans please?

I am not quite sure how to connect it to make it solid.

Thanks.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Thanks, I saw that. So the little bronze clip goes on the trans bracket and wedges the cable in there?

I could do with a close up of the linkage in the truck though - the ones in that thread are too far away.

Thanks Denny

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

So I fired up the beast on Sunday, changed the fluids and filters, set timing, etc. The engine idles and revs fine and the 80e is shifting into the proper gears, but there is a problem. In the TCU program, the gear indicated is N when I have the shifter in Park, R with the shifter in reverse, N in neutral, and 1 when the shifter is in OD, D, 2 and 1. The TPS, speed, and tranny coolant temp values look OK - it's just the gear position that's not right. Anyone have any ideas? Everything is plugged in and wired per George's 80e install instructions. Hopefully, it's just an adjustment in the settings. Let me know what you guys suggest, thanks.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Does the 1 change to 2 once it shifts to 2nd? It is probably indicating what gear the trans is in, not the gear shifter.

I am sure thats the way my PCS works, so I think its normal, I will confirm tomorrow.

If I put it in 1, 2, 3 or 4, it will show 1 until I am moving and it changed to the next gear. About the P and N, it think it always show N instead of P.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

I haven't actually throttled it up in gear. The truck is still up on jacks and I don't have my PST driveshaft in yet. Everything seems to look OK in the TCU program, I just figured it would indicate P with the shifter in park, R for reverse, N for neutral, and 4, 3, 2, 1 for the other shifter positions. If the software only displays N or 1 for the tranny gear, then I guess everything is OK. I didn't want to make any assumptions.

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

The only thing I have left with my 80E install is where to mount the LOKAR trans dipstick that came with the kit. Anyone got any pics please?

Re: 80e Install Pics - Need Help

Mounted mine on the heater/ac box. 2 holes, took out the resistor to access the backside to add the nuts/tighten. Exercise in patience but it worked.
