A/C Question

I turned my a/c on sunday and wow it worked great until about 15 minutes in my driving i changed the lever to bi/level and it got warm. I then changed it back to max a/c and still warn. Turned the a/c off for about 10 minutes while driving and then turned it back on to max a/c and bang cold again. What can that be?

I also noticed that speed 3 for the fan does not work. 1,2 and 4 work but not 3. What can be the cause of that? I remember a past experience with the same issue with the fan speed and it ended up being the resistor on the fan motor. O well any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: A/C Question

The easiest first. Fan speed 3 won’t work. The fan speed is determined by switching between some coils used as resisters. These coils are in the fan box right near the fan relay. Ether the switch on the dash is bad or one of the coils. I’d look at the coils first because they are easer to get to.

Cold not blowing can be trickery. These trucks run both hot and cold at the same time. There is a door that adjusts the amount of cold and warm. It may be that the door was stuck. By the way, working on the door is not fun. You have to pull the air system. Someone posted a great step by step to do it. No cold problems is hard to fix when the problem is intermittent.

Good luck.

Thanks Bill for the tips. Question: coils are in the fan box??? I am almost sure you mean the fan box in the motor compartment correct? Not a box under the dash that i dont know of.

Re: A/C Question

The "coils" are a set of resistors in the engine compartment's heater fan box.....you will see the 4 or 5 wire connector. The resistors are IN the A/C-heater-fan box....but you knew that.

The easier check is the fan selector switch which has the most probabilty of going bad.
Can't say I have heard of any problems with the resistors.

When was the last time you had the freon checked?

I dont think it is a freon problem becasue after it did work again it was working GREAT for the rest of the drive which was about 20 minutes. If i am low on Freon i dont think i would get a/c that cold. It was great of course when it worked. I think it just needed to be ran alittle bit. When i was driving home it worked great and when i got home let it sit for a little while and tried it again it worked great. The major concern was the switch at speed 3. I did notice a smell of burning when at speed 3. Like it was a bad conection. Well i will look at the resistors just to make sure and maybe just find a used switch to troubleshoot. Any one have a used switch that all the speeds work they want to sell.

Re: A/C Question

i had a problem awhile back with the blower only working on high and ac not cooling, i replaced the relay, worked, as far as the ac temp problem, it was low on freon, causing the switch in the condenser not to engage the compressor clutch, added a can and it fixed the problem :2cents:
