AC question for the people of knowledge

ok here is the deal

I had to go to electric fans for a dual core air to air. I also discharged the freon (hell yeah I saved it!) I have the compressor unplugged with the truck idling trying to chase down an AC wire to base a relay off of to turn the fans on when the ac is on. Im not getting any current to the compressor clutch. The system is discharged so is there some type of safety that will not allow the compressor to come on if the sys is discharged.

Anyone know what criteria is needed to run the AC???

jumper the wires that plug into the dryer.

that will allow the compressor to turn on, but will never shut off.

If by chance yours was full, you could ice up the lines, and cause damage.

Since it is empty, only damage will be to compressor from lack of oil.

You didnt by chance buy the CAS radiator with the dual 1300cfm electric fans did you? Good, Cause if you did let me know how you like it, i may change to it before i order my PTE52 kit. Am also more interested on what is needed to run those fans, does it require a higher AMP alternator?

NWSTP: Whats up with that bad ass intake do you have them for sale or what???? Thanks I did that and was able to hook up a relay

erik: Well, no I have some very low profile electrics that flow 2500cfm and fit the stock radiator perfect. I had a shop build me a mount that would incorporate the fans and the radiator, looks good too. I talked with tony on the radiator and he told me if my stock sys was in good shap I may not need it about, a 70% chance that I wouldnt. Here is what I can tell you so far. With the truck idling with ac heat exchanger mounted everything ready to go I can let it heat up to 190+ degrees, turn the fan on and within about 20-40sec I can have the temp gauge almost on the bottom. Thats with a 160* thermo and on a hoter than hell day in Texas (hi 90' atleast) I already had the fans and the mount ran me $120. I dont think cooling is going to be a prob on this truck......not for now anyway.

Im having Jwaller do a chip for me that will use the stock IC relay to trigger the fans, this way you can have some one burn you whatever you need. Just incase though I have an extra sensor in my driver side head to run them manualy off an independant sys/relay. I plan on doing speed pro and am kinda leaving options open.

woops missed one of your questions.

The factory alternator does fine, unless you have any other stuff, big stereo etc etc.

Thank you for your input, i live in Houston so i know what Texas heat can feel like, espeacially in the middle of august. I still think im going to spend about $900 dollars on a new radiator from CAS with the fans, just to fight the texas summer heat and get rid of the old POS. The CAS is an expensive peice but i believe it should be worth it. I believe it will benifit me in the next couple months when i get the PTE52/50delphi's kit and the CAS single core A2A. How do you like your dual A2A and the PTE52?
Oh one more ?, where are your A2A cores mounted?

Appreciate it a bunch

Well as for the pte52 I love it but I think I want to run faster next summer. So I will have it for sale before too long. I think downpipe turbo injectors..everything. I ran them for a whopping 3 months. I would like to step into a 70 series turbo. By just bolting the PTE 52 on my truck went a 12.4 way out of tune. I have no doubt it could have gone low low 12's on nothing else ( I had the ultimate with the 50's) However I think the 52 will run down into the low 11's after that it will run out of air.

The cas dual core. One goes in the stock location the other smack dab behind the grill. Takes some hood latch mods too, cutting mainly. As for how I like everthing....well, get a hold of me in about a month and I tell you. Ill be traveling so much in the next month I wont have time to mess with it.

Thanks again, Sounds like you made a good budget out of those electric fans, I cant wait to get a hold of my CAS radiator. I'd like to see a 11.99 out of sy with the PTE52 kit, SMC alky (waiting to be installed) and a shit load of tunning.

peace out,
Erik

BAD, yep, desribes it in more ways than one

for sale, nope, decided never also. Way to much work, headaches, pain, ect.

In fact #2 is sitting on bench since the nats, I am on a syty break, and haven't done much except read the ubb and list since the nats.

My syty energy gas tank is low and needs time to recover and recharge.

If I may: my $0.02. Every AC has pressure sensor witch will turn off clutch if pressure drops in the system. For safety of compressor, just like Jeff said, so it won’t run without oil that mixed with Freon. Don’t worry about icing anything, the only thing can ice is expansion valve next to evaporative cooler. But ones it defrosts, it’s OK and I am certain it is defrosted by now in Texas there is.

Yeah, Ive got that worked out. I chased down some wires from the compressor so that when the compressor clutch is active it trip a relay and turn the fans on. :2gunfire: :crazyeye:

just tap in your fan relay wire to ac relay wire that goes hot when you turn on ac switch. the ac relay is located on driverside of firewall above brake booster. don't matter whether your ac compressor is working or not, this will turn on your fans.

Why yes, The Low pressure switch is located on the Accumulator on the passenger side of your truck.... This switch will shut off voltage to the a/c clutch circuit when the freon pressure gets below usually 20psi. on the low side... I would usually tie in a circuit on the green wire that feeds the clutch connector and connect it to a relay that will turn the fans on when the a/c compressor clutch is actuated... You really need this circuit and additional fans on the condensor when you convert your a/c system to R-134 or one of the alternative refrigerants like HOT-Shot, Freeze 12 or the like...

Yeah its all wired up. Im still using r12, I had a full charge of it as well. The shop down here is storing it for me. They have expressed interest of buying it from me several times...
