Air to Air

Well my truck will be down until probably October on the ATR headers. ATR claims they have no flanges  So I might as well order more stuff.

Is the charged air sys air to air the way to go? Dual or Single? What kinda power do you pick up. Or how much mph in the 1/4 did you gain?

Can you get the flanges from somewhere else? Have you talked to Mike at AR Autosports?

As far as the air/air - there are lots of fitment problems with the DeQuick. What brand were you planning on using? Single core would be enough for most trucks.

I would do air/air to clean up the engine area and get rid of the headache of air/water. HP gain would just be an added bonus. :)

Another maker would be Charged Air Systems.

Yeah, a clutter free engine bay is also a goal. Does mike make headers now? I talked to some lady in sales at ATR and she said they were waiting on the flanges that connest the crossover  I dunno about this though becuase in thier pictures they are using a two flares and a clamp. So I think Im getting bull shitted----heaviy! I think today I will call them and ask for the truth in the matter. If they have any kindoff parts problem Im going to tell them to send me the prints and I will get the damn things made. Hell, I know a place in Denton TX that can make them by the thousands.

Anyways back to the air to air.

Anyone have some actual data on the conversion?

Who else makes reputable A2A's? I was kind of leaning towards KB as a decent maker of an A2A.

I've had the KB air2air since about '93. My .02 is it IS a quality kit that fits great and cleans up the engine compartment very nice. At $1,200 bux it ain't cheap, but I've never regretted buying it and yanking the stock confused water/air setup.

well right now, Im really close to ordering a dual core air to air. I think I will run my electric fans down here in this sorry ass 100* heat to make sure the truck wont get hot.

if you do this, please record the conversation. I would love to hear there response.

As for the dual core, if you are worried about heat i think the single will be enough. Due to the location of the second core, you will probably have more cooling issues b/c it blocks the radiator. I would say the single core is good to 600hp.

Due to popular demand i think I will make a new and improved bolt on a/a pretty soon. :)

Please do Mike!

If I may put in my suggestions. Please design it so that a minimum of cutting/hacking has to be done to install it, like the KB unit. Also, if possible, desigin it to work with both ATR & KB headers, along w/ stock manifolds. Being able to retain the stock clutch fan would be a plus. As far as cutting holes goes, I'd be willing to run pipes through my wheelwell panels, but I won't cut holes in or around the radiator support area.

Once my truck gets done at McCoy's, I think I'll be pushing, perhaps beyond the limits of my KB I/C.

If you could keep me updated on the design, I could let you know if I'd want one or not before you built any.

Thanks!

its pretty much going to be similar to the KB unit, but better piping, clamps, connectors, etc. Also a little cheaper :)

It's going to require re-clocking the compressor housing, and a hole in the passenger side fenderwell for the piping to pass through. You will be able to keep the stock radiator, ac, clutch fan, etc.

Yeah back when I had my ty, Mike hooked me up with a custom air/air and a spearco core. The fitment was really nice and the air/air core had like 90% efficiency at 10mph. It had something like 1/2 psi drop, which is awesome. My IATs were around 118*F in hotass Tampa, FL in the summer. At the track, during a run, my temps actually went down as I went down the track. It was pretty neat and got me some good traps on 17psi (107mph).

That would be prefect for my application, if it works w/ KB headers.

Will the core be larger than the KB unit, or basically the same? What I mean is, will it be better/more effiecient than KB's?

Honestly for that location the KB size is pretty much as big as you can go. Any taller, and the core will be blocked from the bumper. Any thicker and you might have heat soaking problems. Any longer and it wont clear the frame.

If anything should be added to complete this setup it would be a SPAL 7" on the back to circulate air when not moving fast. Probably dropped the MAT another 15-25 deg.

CAS = Charged Air Systems = Dequick...

If you want to wait forever then place your order.....

FYI: I'd recommend giving Mike at AR Autosports a call if you're looking at Air 2 Air....

how long is the wait? What is the purpose of air to air? Just to clean up the engine bay? How do you contact dequick?

I COULDNT agree with this statement MORE.. In fact this is almost verbatim from what I would post.. NO HACKING the truck please.. Especially the rad support.

Hard to design a GOOD air/air that doesn't require some cutting. There is just no room for the best system.

CAS - I think this setup would work fine if there was some follow-through by Dequick. Unfortunately he won't make a set of pipes that will fit anything, or look presentable. It can be done without electric fans, requiring only one hole in the driver's side fenderwell.

KB - I'm sorry but I think this air/air is completely retarded. The pipes are a total mess, with some sharp 90 degree bends, out of rubber no less. The core is smallish, and almost all of the usable airflow under the truck hits the huge end-tanks, not taking advantage of the surface area that should be presented to oncoming air. I believe it is better than the stock water/air, but still not up to par for an air/air. Mike may be able to make a decent kit & core that is located in the same spot, we'll have to see. If a different core & better pipes are used, it may work. I'm also not a fan of having to route the IC pipes near the turbo, as you would in this configuration. After seeing what Mike has come up with in the past, his actual skills in duplicating his parts with jigs (unlike Dequick), and his actual availability and customer service (WHO KNEW??!!), I'm very interested in seeing what he can come up with.
