Aluminum Rear Brake Drums

A while ago there were some folks that adapted late model F-Body aluminum rear brake drums to a Syclone. Has anyone persued this recently? I recall there was a slight interference problem with doing this on a Typhoon. Any info would be appreciated. I'm still looking for more weight to take out of my truck. Thanks.

The G-body ones fit... I have them on the Sy. They do not fit on the Ty. But change the backing plate on the Ty to the same as the Sy and they supposedly fit...

78 or 79 and up regal, monte, malibu (wagon too), gutless... er cutless..

I'll go poke around the buick board and see if I can come up with specific cars. I got the set I have off a 78 malibu wagon (just love wandering around junk yards ).

For the drums...

check all the g-bodies as there didn't seem to be much rhyme or reason as to what vehicles received them.

You'll find the rear seat braces in all the junked GNX's you'll come across.

Check 3rd Gen F-bodies too

82-92 Camaros and Firebirds. Don't know about 93 and up.

Also, Chevy S-10s and GMC Jimmys, 2 and 4 wheel drive.

Most came with cast iron drums, but have seen a few aluminum ones here and there.

HTH.

Aloha,

Pontiac Grand Prix seem to have them more often than most other g-bodys. They are spot welded in, and you need to take out the back seat - bring a t-50 torx and a BIG breaker bar.

The Pontiacs also have some front braces that others don't. The front braces also are on the 4-door g-bodies.

Rear Seat Braces - check 81-87 Grand Prix, I haven't seen one without them yet. Some 1987 Monte's got them, ALL 1988 Monte's did. Zero Cutlii, and Zero Regals (other than GNX, natch)

The front braces on GP's include curved ones from fenders to core support and another that goes from where the "F41" braces meet the frame rail to triangulate them.

There's a lot more RWD GM vehicles that had those drums than what you're seeing

Does GM still sell new aluminum drums through their parts distributors? Seems like they would need to keep plenty of those in stock, unless they intened for people to replace them with iron drums when they wear out. Has anyone bought brand new ones? I saw them listed in a 1991 GM Crash Estimation Guide for around $114/pair under part number 1255396, but that was 10 years ago....

I can still find them new, but not easily.

Looks like you can still get em new or (if youre like me) you go scrounging around the bone yard checking GM rwd cars out.

I dont necessarily agree with s trucks having them. Ive never seen one if they do and Ive looked at a LOT of s-10s.

Ive only seen one set on a f body. It was (till it got wrapped around a tree) 85 iroc. TPI 305, auto, and with a 7 5/8 gov lock rear 3:42 ratio (only 7 5/8 gov lock 10 bolt Ive ever seen in a f body BTW).

Cool...

Never knew about the early years S trucks having them. Up till bout ~85 they rusted pretty bad so I never gave them a second look at the bone yard. Once I noticed the old round gauges I just moved on..

Now I got another excuse to go wandering around the junk yard..

Lemme have a crack at that "Junk Yard Wars" thingy tv show... Im betting I could come up with some stuff that KICKS ASS (or would catch me on fire tryin.. )

they were not on my 82 beater s10...
i have only ever seen them on gbodies, and they're still currently avail, but not cheap.
i am offering a discount of 10% on baer race brakes in about 2 weeks, if anyone wants em, front or rear

They must have been super rare. I have only seen one S10 drum (other side was missing) in my life. '84 S10, I think. Sitting in a junkyard years ago. Very badly corroded...practically welded on.

What is the advantage other than they should cool down faster?

My experience has been that most of them that you get from the junkyard are warped.

They also heat up faster (negative), but most of your braking isn't down the rear brakes anyways.

But are they as durable as CI.

Yes. They have steel inserts that the brake drums ride on.

Re: Aluminum Rear Brake Drums

So the weight is what 3-4 lbs at most. Don't seam to worth the trouble.

Mine were 11#s lighter than stock, plus its all rotating mass. The $100 cost for them isn't going to drop you .1 of second in the quartermile. It definately not the most cost effective modification. If your looking to drop the mass of your vehicle, its one of the easier thing to do. It still wouldn't be my first choice but after you have done the 3-4 weight losss modifications, the drums start to make sense.
