AN line - cutting and assembling

Hey Guys,

Putting together Turbo Oil & AT Aux Cooler lines out of #6 AN, which I always hate to do. Whenever I have to cut the AN line I have 1 hell of a time getting the line into the hose end fitting.

So, anybody got any tricks ? New line comes w the slick tape. It slides into the fitting a little easier, altho' I'm not sure whether U R supposed to leave the tape on.

When I cut the SS line, the edge is always ragged as hell, and I always try to clip all the SS wire away that I can, which isn't very easy to do. Then it is Very difficult to force into the fitting w all thes wire ends hanging out. R we supposed to tape the cut end w the same slick tape ? Or is there some special way to cut the line - Hacksaw ?

i've heard of cut off wheels, chop saws doing a good job at cutting the line. all the articles i've seen say to tape up the ends and leave whatever tape is left on the ss line when assembling the end of it.

I taped where I was going to cut then used straight cut, compound sheetmetal shears.

Then you can use the shears to trim the little wires that might fray when your done.

This worked on all the lines I did -4 thru -8.

The place where I bought my lines uses a circular chop saw with a diamond tipped blade.

I always use two hose clamps. On on either side of the section I want to cut. I thighten them as hard as I dare as close to each other as I can. Then I use a realy fine sawblade. Always works perfect. Nice edges without the raggedness and since the ends get compressed for a while after it is easy slide the end into the socket.

This is the way I was taught in tech school...

use duct tape.. wrap it as tight as possible. (you'll find out that on the smaller line it is harder) -6 shouldnt be too bad. use a fine tooth blade or cutoff wheel. Thinner the better. Saw through, and unwrap the tape. Insert into the fitting as soon as possible so that is doesnt start to unwrap. Push the hose in a twisting manner all the way up to the line on the side of the fitting then mark a line on the braided line at the bottom of the fitting. This will be helpful to know if the hose is pushing ouf of the fitting when you begin to tighten it. When all done tightening use some carb spray and clean out the lines with air.. dont forget to use assembly lube on the threads.

i found that using tqpe with a thread in it helped to hold it tighter than duct tape.
I found that when looking at the kind of tape that russel hose comes left on it in the box.

I use a hand held cut off wheel.

put hose upright in vise

use needle nose around the edges to get those straglers into the hole.

use socket and ratched to push the nut down as i use the ratched to spin the nut down while checking with the needle nose for stray wires.

about a minute per end after you've done a couple.

I think cutting anyway but a fast cutoff wheel and you will have a mess to deal with.

I wrap the cut line with regular electricians tape, then use a hammer and a wood chisel to cut it in the middle of the tape. WD40 the freshly cut hose end and insert it into fitting with small piece of tape still in place. Sounds stupid, but works great. Cuts are clean and crisp with no loose ends.

I learned this from an old local funny car crew chief many years ago.

yeh this works too but you have to make sure the chissel end is sharp and you really smack it good.. if you make little taps b/c you are scared to smack your fingers with the hammer it doesnt work so well :)

Yeah i've used the dremel method and get alot of debris in the lines to clean out. Now, i just wrap the line up tight with electric tape, cut the line with a fine tooth metal hacksaw blade, and unwrap tape. Then, twist on the fitting, back it out a half turn after it bottoms out, and lube up the threads with 10w30 or whatever, and thread it on.
