Re: another what would you do turbo ?
My :2cents: about turbos on stock motors. I like to group them into 3 options. stock, bolt in and turbo/DP combo.
The stock turbo is efficient at stock boost levels. A bigger turbo may have a small gains because reduce exhaust restriction but a turbo swap is probably not worth the minimal gain at stock boost levels. The stock turbo on a Syclone can do mid 12's at 18-20 psi with more timing & better gas. By 18-20psi you are fighting hot air intake temps as the stock turbo is not efficient at this boost level. You can help offset the intake temps at higher boost levels with alky injection.
A larger mitsubishi bolt in turbo is only going to be worthwhile if your going to run higher boost levels than stock. With a larger exhaust housing such as a 14cm is used, a high stall converter should be used. At higher boost levels the stock injectors maybe a limitation, transmission life could be shortened.
A moderate turbo (such as PTE52) and 3" DP is going to be more effiecent than the mitsubishi turbos. It is going to require bigger injectors, bigger stall converter and shortly require a beefed up transmission. At 25psi and higher octane, mid's 11 is possible in a Syclone. I would caution about going too large of a turbo with stock motor/cam/head, the motor just isn't going to flow enough to advantage of a large frame turbo. (ie PTE 72) A mid frame turbo with a 60-1 (PTE52 uses this wheel), 61mm or 62mm compressor wheel is going to flow more than enough air for a stock motor.
From a tuning perspective, putting on a bigger turbo such as a PTE52 only stock motor is much easier tune for. It mostly only affects the wot tuning. Putting on a set of L35 head, moderate cam and 20g/3" DP is much more difficult to tune for because it affect the entire VE fueling curve. Both combo may make the similar hp, but the bigger turbo on the stock motor is the easier tuning route.
