Any info on pickup coil removal?

I have replaced everything in the ignition/fuel/vac system but the coil(tested ok on meter) and the distributer. I am trying to get the truck to hold an idle. I had read a post about the pickup coil being the culprit so i am kinda leaning towards this to hopefully be my problem. The only problem i have is that i don't know how to get it out. Will i have to retime the truck? Should i remove anything to gain access to this coil? Any help is appreciated.

The pickup coil is located inside the distributor, under the rotor. You will need to remove the distributor to change it, and you will need to re-set your timing afterwards.

To pull the pickup coil, you first need to remove the distributor shaft. To do that, you first need to remove the drive gear at the bottom of the shaft. To do that, drive out the roll pin that holds the gear to the shaft. The gear and shaft should then just pull out.

I just did this last week, but I bought the entire distributor for 99bucs at autozone, the p/u coil was 5bucs, I figured it was worth the 99bucs.

It's not hard at all. I replaced mine about 6 months ago, the only reason I didn't get a whole new distributor is the wife said that the truck was already a money pit, go figure :-? . Either way you will have to pull the distributor so if money isn't a concern you might as well get the whole thing and put it in. But like was said, replacing just the coil is not that hard at all. Just knock out the pin in the gear, pull the dist shaft out, replace the coil, put it all back together, put it back in the engine, time it and your done.

did you guys remove your upper ic, throttle body, and intake like the book says to? I asked my bud for help. I am going to dig in tonight.

Nope, pretty much left everything on. The only thing that may be different about mine and your truck is that I do have the EGR gone. Makes a little more room to get back there. You will want to take the dist cap off but other than that I had no trouble removing and replacing the distributor. Oh yeah, you need to remove the vaccuum fitting on the back of the plentum, just to make it easier. Hope this helps.

I thought the same thing you did. Until i found out the distributor hold down plate slides out of the way. I didnt remove anything but the one vac line.

make sure you line up no one on the cap and the timing mark on the balncer before you remove the dist. A pen mark long line on the upper intake helps you to be sure you are not off 1 tooth going back in.
