Any solution for my sloppy shifter?

Dont know if alot of our trucks are like this but my shifter really blows. It looks like its in 2nd when its in 1st the shifter saftey locks when the tranny isnt fully in od and reverse isnt dead on either. Ive tried everything, adjusted the cable on the tranny in many different spots with no luck, it will line up in park one way and line up in 1st the other way. No happy median. Ive tried shifting the center console, nothing.

Any ideas what could be wrong or is this just normal crap for these trucks?

Is this something that happens with a worn cable? TIA

mine lines up fine.. mine was all messed up before after a propshaft mangled up my range selector maybe that's your problem??

Range selector is good. I tweaked it for my gilbert prop but only the lower angle as not to change the throw ratio. Will a worn out cable do this?

It sounds like the tansmission cable needs to be adjusted. Sometime you might have to teak the larger bracket (forward or rearward) that bolts to the transmission pan bolts. Theirs is alway a possibility if the propshaft took out the transmssion cable (ie it got wrapped around) that it bent the whole shifter assembly. I have seen that happen before.

Does it feel sloppy too? If you go to put it in gear, do you get a nice positive engagement? If not, pull the pan and see if the little clip that holds the relationship of the rooster comb and the manual shaft has come loose(popped off). Or the the little ferule that the cable eyelet goes over may have come loose and is moving around in the shift lever. If that little piece is bad, let me know. I've got those too if you need them. If the cable is bad let me know what you need. I've got EVERYTHING for the cable setup now. Shifter lever (stainless), cable, ferule, clips, everything.

I had issues with my truck after I got my Gilbert propshaft installed. Had a friend weld my range select lever and it wasn't 100% to my liking. However as I always say, "when you get something for free, you get what you pay for". I got the nice stainless steel one that Detroit Turbo sells and things still weren't lining up perfect. Turns out the thicker cast TCI pan that I installled at the same time as my Gilbert was the problem. The extra thickness of the pan kicked the cable out further altering the throw.

Well, im going to fool around with that bracket attatched to the tranny pan next. I did unnecesseraly bend that out of the way for the gilbert. Thanks for the input guys. when i move the range selector on the tranny by hand it is a vey nice positive engagement. I even feel it engage through the cable when I use the console shifter even though the shifter doesnt seem synchronized.

For example, when in reverse the shifter has about an inch to inch and a half of play front to back. Does that seem normal?

No that's not normal. If you can move the shifter by hand and you have solid engagement and the ferule isn't moving around from being loose, then your cable is shot. Something I tell guys to look for when the cable gets messed up like this with no accident damage, is to look to make sure all the grounds are intact. IF a ground is missing, the cable will become a "ground" and shorten the life of the cable. Just something to look for and think about.

i sell replacement heavy duty shifter cables also, with all new brackets for the pan, and selector lever, + new hardware, and one year warranty. :tup:

Is it possible to get the stock shifter tuned up (any bushings, cable, parts etc) to where it will shift firm and precise for manual shifting? basically good enough to keep it over installing an aftermarket shifter?
