Are wheel spacers safe?

I'm a little concerned about running my wheel spacers I got on the rear just because adding hardware has the possibility of failure...is there any danger to running wheels spacers?

If I was doing jumps or had a crazy hydraulic set-up, I would be even more concerned.

Any Thoughts?

I should put this in the drtivetrain forum, but I figured I'll get more hits on this one...

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

Ive ran billet aluminum 1.25" spacers with pressed in studs for years now. Boost launches, roll ons, and everything between. Never had a prob or sheared a bolt. I just occasionally check and retorque them from time to time.

I run 2.25" spacer/adapters on my S10. Converts the 2wd offset to an offset more suitable for C5 wheels. I've drag raced (albeit slowly) autocrossed, and generally whipped the snot out of this little truck for 3 years now without a single problem. I bought them from Skulte performance. They have pictures on thier website of road race guys that have crashed, broken the wheel, and the adapter/spacer is still bolted on just like normal. Not to mention those guys have some super great customer support!!

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

BMW guys seem to run spacers like they are the new fad, although most arent they big 1.5" ones we use, but apparently Porsche does use something similar from the factory with no problems.

I may need spacers for my new wheel combo if and when my truck actually gets back on the road, but I plan on crushing the tops of the nuts slightly (like seat bolts) as well as using red threadlocker to keep the spacer bolted on the original studs.

Ive never heard anyone actually having problems with the studs on the spacers themselves, its usually the spacer coming off of the original studs.

Same with Dodge, they've had to put them on the R/F of there 3/4 ton trucks from the factory to get them to drive straight.

Just recheck them from time to time and you'll be fine.

jeff "alwayswantedone" had them on his ty and the studs broke off ripping the cladding apart. he was doing about 20mph around the corner leaving my house.

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

Just make sure they are hubcentric and wheelcentric. I have been running 1" spacers (adaptors) on the back for about a year now. I do re-torque all the nuts every now and then to 85ft-lbs

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

They are actually only wheelcentric (I believe)...is that going to cause a problem?

When I got them I figured they are only wheelcentric because the ad didn't say anything about hubcentric.

Googled "hub centric", and it seems that mine are only lugcentric... When I put them on, I didn't pay attention to how tight fitting it was on the hub---There was no vibrations or anything driving down the freeway at 70mph...and if my memory serves me right, I believe they were not tightly snug against the little raised part on the drum.

I would take a look at it myself, but it's about 4k miles away, and I don't get to see my Ty till next vacation :-(

These are the exact same ones I got.

or adapters?

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

I believe most of us are talking adapters.
Skulte makes the best.
I have run 1.5 and 1.25 spacers on the rear of 2 different trucks with no issues whatsoever.
Racing auto cross dyno all of it.
never had one issue.

I cross torque them to 95 ft/lbs, pull the wheel off at 100 or so miles and retorque.
The key thing to getting the lug centric spacers to seat level is to have a clean mating surface and cross torque them in steps like you are doing head bolts.
Don't crank one side down before the other is not seated.

BMWs use hubcentric wheels.
Meaning the spacer/adapter must fit tight to the surface of the hub and again tight to the surface of the wheel.
And there is an adapter to run a BMW Hubcentric wheel on the GM lug centric hub.
We were looking at '01 M5 wheels on my Ty at one time.

Slightly OT:
Does any one know where to get the shallow lugs in the pic of that adapter?
Mine went to lunch and never came back.

Yes, it sucks

I dont see why you would need one? I mean, the holes are tapered just the same as any other wheel, as long as the center bore of the wheel works on the vehicles hub, the lugs should center it reguardless of how it was meant to be mounted :dunno:

I plan on using my M5 wheels on my car even if I swap over the GTO wheel hubs, I hate that hubcentric crap.

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

120 X 5 = 4.7244094488 X 5

We are blessed with 4.75 X 5.
I think it is the taper of the holes that is off by enough to not let them seat squarely.
I am guessing you might be able to force it but that could also cause some vibration issues.

There is also different angles of the seat of the acorn.
I forgot the common variations but I believe GM to BMW was different from that aspect as well.
Get a set of lugs that match the BMW bevel angle and torque them a couple times. I bet they fit.

GTO is 120mm anyway so I dont need to worry about that :)

Spacers are bad.
Adapters are good.
Lug AND hub centric are best.

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

which studs?

It was one of the adapter studs that hold the wheel to the adapter that broke and the wheel just about came off. I was on the highway doing like 110 about 20 minutes prior so this could have been way worse.

To explain a bit I had the ty at pepboys with a heater problem and had a different (same height) wheel on that soon to be problem spot since I had one tire replaced (sidewall tore all the way around on the old tire) and the new tire/wheel was in the truck. So since pepboys said the problem with the heat was controls in the dashboard and they don't do that kind of work I told them to swap the one wheel for me since the truck was there. I do not know if they over tightened it or did not tighten it enough or what but leaving from Don's house and going around the corner at the end of his road the wheel just about came off. I think now that I am kinda remembering a few of the studs broke and the truck just kinda sat half ass on the wheel with maybe one loose stud left.

The cladding piece behind the door was broken and the wheel may have been damaged and the spacer was a bit scraped up. I did replace the studs and am using those spacers now on my ty again for the first time in years but it has been ok. Not that I really drive it all that often.

Oh and yes I did get pepboys to pay for the damages. They were not happy but paid without too much argument. Hell if it happened at highway speeds it would have cost them way more and I possibly would not be here to type this but thankfully it didn't.

Oh and my fathers s6 has the hubcentric spacers all the way around since the wheels I picked up for it wouldn't fit over the front calipers. It would have looked a bit strange with just the front wheels spaced out a bit so thats why they are on all four. Anyway those things have stayed nice and tight ever since putting them on the car. The hubcentric seems to lock them together really good.

You need to times 4.75 by 25.4 to get the accurate measurement, which equals 120.65mm.

So 120.65-120=0.65mm difference or almost nothing.

Re: Are wheel spacers safe?

For all guys using or contemplating Z06 wheels with 1" spacers BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!! I had my studs break several times. After about two years of bs, I had the wheels off to paint one day and before I put them back on I noticed grooves on the back side of the hub (on the rear Z06 wheel). As it would turn out, the factory studs on our axles are just a **** hair longer than 1". You don't really notice it when you put the wheel on but it is enough to do some serious damage over time. Ask Berzerker who had to come give me some extra lugs up in Denver one night:lol: Thanks Jeff!! What I did was pull the stock studs out and replace them with the next shorter size. This worked great. I even made a thread about it once but no one really cared.

I think it helps reduce the shear load on the studs.
