ARP Head Bolts for Vortec.

That kit is not the right one.. the expensive one is the right one. It is not the same as the small block one. A couple of the bolts are different length.

I looked back through my receipts (no small task) and I paid $139 for mine.

The bolts are the only way to go.. there is not an ARP stud kit for these motors. At least that was my understanding at the time. I bought mine over a year ago. I know they seem expensive, but think how much money you would have to spend if you have a head gasket leaking.

Oddly enough I contemplated this (STUD KIT) as it has better overall clamping force due to the design. However, looking at the engine bay I think it would be ILL-advised to do that on atleast the driver's side head since the brake booster would be in the way. Its been a while since I looked just remember something about looking at it think it would be a real PITA in the event that you had to actually pull a head off for some reason.

Just an idea to think about, I'm sure there are stud kits out there that DO fit or could be made to work, but dont paint yerself into a corner so to speak.

Yeah no studs for me. I thought the Vortec heads would use the same length bolts as a V8 with Vortecs, just fewer of them. Figures a kit with fewer bolts costs twice as much.

I think my next Sy build is going to be a turbo SBC

I think I paid like $130 for the set when I put the vortec heads on last year. The reason for the price is because they are the "pro-series" which is the high end arp bolts, I was kind of pissed about the price but they sure do look good 12 point heads. I believe those head bolts are on Ed Hess's motor right now unless he decided to not use them.

the cool thing about the newest APR stud kits is that they have allen heads in the tops of them so that you can remove the studs and the head while it's in the vehicle :)

In my ARP 2002 catalog they list 4 part numbers for the 4.3L with stock type heads, not aftermarket heads.

233-4001-hex nuts---98.69
233-4401- hex nuts undercut studs---not in summits database
233-4301-12 point nuts---108.39
233-4601-12 point nuts with undercut studs---120.39

None of the above part numbers were in stock, probably a few weeks to get them.

I know this post is a few days old.... I had a discussion with ARP about the difference and cost between #133-3701 v-Six bolt kit @ $130 and the #134-3701 SB v-8 kit @ $70.

The only difference (other than the extra center cyclinder bolts for the SB) is the short exterior head bolts are 120 thousandths shorter in the v-6 kit. This bolt is a special length and is not massed produced like the v8 kit bolts, thus the extra charge on the v-6 kit. 20 thousandth doesn't seem to be much of a difference but obviously there is a concern with bottoming out on the stock blocks. The bowtie blocks I believe have a deeper tap.

Last year, when I built my motor I had already purchased the V-8 kit. I then got concern when someone told me that there were differences in the kits. Before I put my heads on I checked the depth of the taps and had plenty of room. I used the v-8 kit and have had no problems. I am running the bowtie block and have not checked the depth in our stock block.

It just falls in the same line that our trucks and the 4.3motor is not the most popular or massed produced vechiles /motors and it cost us everwhere. But we expect that and wouldn't trade our trucks for anything else. :D

After the ARP discussion my speed shop guys were thinking that maybe the shorter bolts came about because of the circle track guys cutting the decks, etc and that they were porbably the first to have ARP but together the bolt kit. But that didn't make sense as there are separate kits for the brodix, 18 degree and other heads. Also, if that were true then the v-8 kit would have the same problem with that bolt length when cutting decks.

At the end of the day.....ARP's the best. Check your clearances and use either kit that works for you. Or the stud kit... 8)

Resurrecting thread

Old thread, need new info.

Has anyone tried the ARP-134-3601 small block chevy kit in our stock 4.3L block? I need to order a set of head fasteners ASAP and I can't make a decision. I'm leaning towards 6 point bolts. Looking to hear from someone who's done it before.

I figure I never had a problem with my stock GM head bolts with boost high enough to max out my 30 PSI boost gauge (at one point), so the standard issue ARP ought to be enough.

sure get the SBC kit and you will have a few extra studs left over. and most of the time they are even cheaper.

I bought 134-3701 which I think is just 12 point SBC head bolts.

Re: ARP Head Bolts for Vortec.

What about what John Gerber said in post #11 above?

The only difference (other than the extra center cyclinder bolts for the SB) is the short exterior head bolts are 120 thousandths shorter in the v-6 kit. This bolt is a special length and is not massed produced like the v8 kit bolts, thus the extra charge on the v-6 kit. 20 thousandth doesn't seem to be much of a difference but obviously there is a concern with bottoming out on the stock blocks. The bowtie blocks I believe have a deeper tap.

So can anyone *personally* verify that the small block kit's extra "120 thousandths" length on the short exterior head bolts, doesn't cause a problem on a stock block? Dave have you torqued your new heads down yet? It seems strange why ARP would make this V6 kit at extra cost if the difference in length wasn't important.

Hmmn, I never notice or knew about that. I imagine its more for people who deck their heads. I can check the depth of when my bolts bottom out tonight for you. Unfortunately I don't have a set of Vortec's anymore, so I can't compare the depth vs stock.

Re: ARP Head Bolts for Vortec.

My engine doesn't have head gasket on it, but the rest of the bolts are torqued (I was using compressed air to remove the valve locks) The ARP bolts come with enough washer (they had some depth them as well) with for the whole set, so I assume they want to you use them. When I checked the bolts, I didn't use the washer (I figured if its that close its probably to close). I went through my driverside bolts last night with out any problem.

I didn't have a chance to pull the head or check the passenger side (turbo is mocked up), my wife was getting antsy about me being in the gararge and it was our wedding anniversary :)

Re: ARP Head Bolts for Vortec.

Thanks for checking, Dave. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the Small block chevy Bolt kit, probably in 6 point. I guess we'll know if it really works once I get into high boost a few times and see if it blows or not!
