Today i was driving home from a friends house trying to get home before kick-off of TX - OU and Penn St. - Mich, and i was going around 70 miles an hour and punched it to get around another car. I got up to around 105 then my ty kinda stalled out like a car with a gov on it ( cuts out until you slow back down) then the check engine like came on so i pulled over to see if i blew anything under the hood. Everything looked fine and the check engine light when out, so i jumped back in a drove home nice and easy. When i got home i smelled a burned rubber smell from the back end only, so im guessing it might be my tranny or my exhaust. I know the last owner put atr exhaust but i dont know if he chaned out the cat also.. any tips would help thanks.

Usually catalytic converters smell like ROTTEN eggs when they are going SOUTH...

Need more information...

Stock chip ?
What Boost ?
Knock?
MAT ?

etc. not to cause problems, but need more information than whats listed... The post is too vague to offer up a REASONABLE SUGGESTION.

Almost forgot i ran a datamaster test last week and had a real high retard knock it got up to 12.4 at one point..before the test i changed out my plugs and wires. After the test i changed out my cap and rotor, but havent had a chance to run another test since the guy with the datamaster is outta town.

I think U just answered yer 1st post then.. If its still knocking then the ECM is gonna pull all timing out of it to attempt to prohibit knock, basically its gonna run like dogsh*t

Also, I forget where the stocker is at, but around that speed is where the STOCK LIMITER kicks in, except I think its around 110-115 (cant remember).

Get out of it if its still knocking that high, unless you wanna put a new engine in it......

One last thing i noticed...after watching hours of football i went outside and started up the ty and noticed that the exhaust smells much richer now then it did before all the fun started on the way home. I'm no big engine guy, but i like to learn when i have the chance and stuff, but can a bad cat throw of your timing? just curious..a yes or no would work or if you want to throw a little more in that would be cool also..

No a catalytic converter wont change yer timing, its nothing more than a big ass filter setup (for lack of better words) in the exhaust. As it gets warmer it functions better, there is NO adjustment to this and the only bearing it will reflect if it fails, would be one of 2 options:

1. Pluggage, slow/no spool, poor performance, possibly stalling
2. Blown out Insides, Overboosting, quicker spool, louder exhaust, stench from exhaust (failure to convert the stuff it was designed for).

Either way, it wont mechanically change the timing.. Base timing is set on the actual distributor and then the ECM controls advance/retard from there within its limits.

You said the burnt rubber smell was from the rear? Is your truck lowered? There is a plastic sheath on the brake lines(cables) that run to the rear. On mine, the cable rubbed on the ATR exhaust and burned off the housing. Had to use zip ties and secure it to the rear axle housing.

Sounds like you overboosted. Light will come on during the overboosted condition and then go out. Code 31 will be stored in the ecm. Fuel cuts out when you overboost for a certain period(very short period)and then come back on.

Go through the engine compartment and see if you have anything close to the turbo. I came back off a trip after redoing my air intake and I had the PCV line that comes off of the passenger side too close to the turbo. It wasn't touching by a long shot, but close enough to harden the rubber and make a nice stink.
