CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

with cloneman315's comparison thread getting sticky'd and the recent discussions about availability, parts, 32-spline shaft upgrades and other things, I'd like to get a definitive database of all parts, pieces and different models these transfercases came in.

If your truck is currently on a lift, jackstands or taken apart, could you get the information off of the ID Tag bolted to the case, the numbers off the tailshaft housing and any other casting numbers off the front half of the case (is visible). Also, please state Year and if your truck is a Syclone or Typhoon. If your case is not original to your truck, please indicate that.

Now I'm going to have to go read that sticky. I'll crawl under mine this week and see what's there. I do know my tag is aluminum, no gold tint like yours, unless thats flash or something else.

I'm going to crawl under my truck this week as well.

The tag picture I just pulled off the internet, I've seen Silver, Gold & Blue, the Blue ones seemed to be found on all the later model cases, particularly 1998 Astro/Safari. That gold tag was from a 1994 GMC Safari. I suspect everyone on here will have a silver tag :dunno:

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

great! thanks for the pics too, so far nothing surprising yet, except the existance of the 4472-"04" number.

I'm going to assume the tail shaft # is 13-72-066-901 or 13-72-066-901-B

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

In the sticky, I put a link which has some info on the relevance of the 4472-XX numbers. :dunno:

I would imagine the tail shaft would be one of the numbers on the tag rather than the casting though.

the numbers case to the front case, rear case and tailshaft housing have nothing to do with the tag ID. The tag has the manufactures date, the 4472 model along with the 2 digit suffix which Im not 100% sure about yet, although "04" does not exist on the page you mentioned. The rest of the tag has a Borg Warner serial # and the GM part #

I want to pick up a spare case to start building for my truck, and with Tom Joy breaking his 27 spline output shaft and upgrading to a Ty case, it would be nice to know what we should and should not buy out of the junkyards.

The only significant thing junkyards indicate is the size of the output flange for the propshaft, which is either 3.5" or 4.25". According to all the junkyards I have searched, they designate all the Astro/Safari cases as 3.5" and all of the Bravada/SyTy cases as 4.25"................BUT then when you search cases on eBay, the people selling them list them as 3.5" and note them as fitting Astro/Safari & SyTy, so there is a ton of conflicting information out there.

Syclone # 6 1 3:
Blue ID Tag: 020791 4472-04 105147 15672918
Front Case Casting: 13-72-039-901

Tail Shaft Casting: 13-72-066-901

Here's the info from the spare used transfer case I picked up from Aaron.
Not sure what it came out of though.
Looks identcal to the one in my Syclone.

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

thats a 4472-01 tag, should have a 27 spline output shaft and the short "Syclone" housing

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

so what I've uncovered so far is there are 4 different configurations for the BW4472 Transfercases.

Getting some Typhoon numbers in here will help figure out. There are 12 different GM Part Numbers used on these cases, only 5 of those numbers have been crossed to a 4472-XX number, so the research continues.....

and thank you to everyone who went and revised their information above, I did notice and it was helpful.

Also, almost every site I have come across that actually lists the information, says Typhoons are 27 Spline Outputs :screwy:

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

Despite what all the "remanufacture" sites and everything on the interweb says, I believe the Typhoon case should yield a 15685141 GM Part number with a 4472-06 BW Number.

There may be a 15960128 GM number out there is well on a Ty, hopefully someone finds one of these because I do not have the BW # for this unit.

I'm still not sure what the colors of the tags designate (if anything) but it might just be a grouping thing.

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

The reason I got all interested was because I was trying to work out TC compatibility for an Astro van unit...

From the seller:

eBay dude said:
It is 27 spline

Casting numbers are 44-72 and 039-901

Stamped on plate:

1221593 4472-09
128005 15963557

13-72-065-901

Tag is gold.

I am sceptical it is 27 splines but am not about to drop $300 to find out.

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

gotcha,

well that does appear to be a 90-95 Astro/Safari unit. On some of the sites I have been on, they also list that as compatible to Syclones AND Typhoons, but as well all "know" (I think), Typhoons are 32 Spline outputs.....

You can see from the picture that is has the longer tailshaft housing, which would be correct for a Typhoon........ if it was 32 spline, but incorrect for a Syclone even if it was 27 spline.

If you were able to get the tailshaft housing number, that "should" confirm if it was 27 or 32 spline. From what I have gathered so far 44-72-066-901-B or 13-72-066-901-B should be 32 Spline Long Tailshaft housings.

The front case number we need to stay away from 44-72-039-903.

See if you can get the tailshaft number from eBay dude.

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

sweet! That's what I was hoping to see. Proves that every source on the internet is wrong

The tailshaft housing # would be nice, the Rear Case number should be the same for every single 1372/4472 case on the planet, even up to the 98 Astros, all the same rear case. As far as our community is concerned, the front case # should be 13-72-039-901 for any SyTyBravBlazeJimAstroSafari 1995 and earlier. After 96 they changed.

Re: CALLING ALL OWNERS: Check out your Transfer Case

yup, Ty owners be slackin!!!!!

the more data we have, the better.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, but for the past 3 days, I have been searching this forum (lots of previously scattered info), Ive searched s10forum, astrosafariforum, oldsmobile forum and even a BMW forum where someone was using a 4472 in an E30!!!

Even with all that info out there, there is still a bunch of holes in my spreadsheet that need to be filled and confirmed.

What sucks is when I find information and it conflicts or doesnt line up 100% with what I have noted already, then I have to dig in and find out why, but these are the things I believe will make the 1372/4472 crystal clear instead of a little foggy.

I'm also trying to find clean, clear pictures of some of the differences of these units so if we stumble upon one on eBay or Craigslist and someone does no provide all the information, we might be able to determine if its useful for our application or not based on visual cues.
