cap mount coil?

Anyone used or have experience with using a cap mounted coil type of ignition setup? I'm looking at the DUI system for V6's that mount the coil to the cap vs on a bracket. I like the idea cause it's one less wire, and one less thing mounted on the engine. Already getting rid of the EGR crap. If I could move the coil to the top of the cap and then do a remote mount of the map sensor... that'd be awesome. But the more I look at these, the more I'm thinking its more of an older V6 and mainly V8 thing. Seems they all favor the vacuum advance option vs electronic.

Re: cap mount coil?

You're referring to HEI distributors. A quick search revealed that there are V6 HEI distributors available.

You could get an HEI to work with the stock ECM by substituting in a SyTy pick up coil (I don't know if the HEI pick up coil has the same electrical characteristics, maybe it does) and SyTy ignition module that has the output for ECM control. You would also have to mechanically lock the advance, and remove the vacuum pot for clearance. I know there are V8 HEI distributors that work with early ECM's. My 85 Corvette with TPI has one. Maybe there are early EFI V6 applications as well. I have no idea.

HEI distributors are also substantially larger in diameter. It's likely that it just won't fit a SyTy. And if it does fit, how are you going to tighten the hold down bolt??? It's bad enough with the smaller diameter stock distributor.

I don't see this happening, but offer my observations anyway.

Thats what I thought. It'd be too much trouble to make it anywhere remotely worth wild. Haha. Thanks!
