Car seats (for kids) in a Sy.

So I almost have the Sy ready to drive and I promised my son that we'd go up the street tonight so I needed to put his car seat in the truck. After reading the instructions and looking at the types of belts in a Syclone, I realize that unfortunately it's not possible or I'm missing something.

Since there are two different belts (one shoulder and one lap) that are attached to different points on the buckle, there's no way to get all the slack out of one of them. The instructions state to tighten the lap belt as much as possible by pulling on the shoulder portion of it. That's not possible since they are not attached.

Needless to say, he was disappointed. Not as much as I was since I tried starting the truck and found out the fuel pump is dead. So, the question is if anybody has installed a kid's car seat in a Syclone and if so, how. If not, has anybody swapped seat belts for newer style S10 versions that are one piece?

Seems to me that if you use one of those clips...I call them H clips but they're not really an H. It links the two belts on the door side of the carseat and in effect locks the shoulder strap to the lap strap. If the lap strap is tight and the shoulder strap is clipped, you're good to go.

Or am I missing something?

Yeah, your car seat or booster seat should have come with a clip, that does resemble an H. It may be affixed to the back of the carseat until you remove and use it. I always just clipped the 2 belts together and ran them through the back base of the seat if I remember right(been awhile!) & made sure the slack was out of it. Only bad part of using the clip is that it wore down & cracked the plastic on my belt cover where the lap meets the shoulder belt

Also if you pull the belt all the way out, it might lock as you feed it back in. This is a good way to tighten the seat and make it secure. I'm kinda sure it does it, but I can't remember for sure.

I was using the "H" clip that comes with the seat. Here are the instructions from the manual:

ELR - Emergency Locking Retractor Belts

Definition:These belts only lock in a sudden stop or crash. To see if you have this type of belt, pull on the lap belt, let it return part way, then pull on it again. If it moves freely, it is an ELR belt and the child restraint could work loose during normal driving. Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual.

ELR shoulder belts either require a locking clip or cannot be used with any child restraint. Note:You may
use an ELR lap and shoulder belt when using this child restraint as belt-positioning booster; no locking clip is required.

Before you put your child restraint in the vehicle, buckle the lap/shoulder belt. Pull on the lap belt portion. If it loosens or slips, you must either use a locking clip to hold the seat belt tight or move the child restraint to another seating location.

Thread both vehicle lap and shoulder belts through the slot (as shown) and out other side. Buckle.
Pull up on shoulder belt until all slack is out and lap belt is tight.

The last part is what can't be done since they are two different belts. For those that are using a child seat in a Syclone, I recommend you double-check the manual for your particular seat and see if you are using it correctly. Based on this information I don't believe that this particular seat (Safety 1st) and probably others are not compatible with the belts in a Syclone since they are two piece and not one piece.

For a short drive up the street I can strap it in, but I wouldn't take a road trip with it in the truck. I don't believe that pulling the belts out all the way will initiate the latching mechanism like most modern cars will but I haven't tried (I figure these belts are old school).

I have the Simpson seat for my son, and we had it in the Sy without any issues. The GF put it in though, so I can't really comment on more than that.

on the syclone the pass side seatbelt, you pull out the LOWER seatbelt, and the locks like all the newer cars do with the upper belt. mine works on my syclone.

BINGO! That's one thing I didn't try since I figured it was too old. Tried it today and it does lock, so this is going to work. Thanks!

correct. you did mention that first although i tried pulling out the upper portion and it didn't seem to lock. i did the upper since i'm used to our other cars working that way.

My fault, since I explained it incorrectly. Now if I can convince my wife to let me put a seat in the front of the SY.

All you have to do is get your kid to talk non-stop about the truck and she doesn't have a choice. I used to be at a point where I didn't care if the truck ran or not, but with my son wanting to work on the truck and ride in it, I now have a reason to get it back on the road and functioning properly.
