Re: Center cap bolt stuck....HELP!

Update...I didnt get to work on it Saturday because of a family cookout but Sunday I got out the easy-outs and went to work. I put the sucker in and it got a good bite and that bolt didnt want to turn at all! So i get the drill and reverse the direction and started applying some serious pressure and right when i think its going to come out the easy out breaks! I was pissed! So I get down to see what damage ive done and when i look at the nut i notice that it DID turn. So I take some needle nose and twist it the rest of the way out. I got verrrrry lucky! If it wouldve broken just a moment sooner i wouldve had a bigger mess! Im just glad its out! Thank God!!

Reviving old thread here but in my quest to get mine right I had this same issue. My left front was stuck some kinda bad. I used the c clamp method and it came out in no time. I love the resources available for us on this site! I'm going to have to reup my donations. Hope everyone else is having a good syty Saturday!

I had forgotten all about this thread. After this, I always use a little anti seize on the bolts so they don't bond to the aluminum wheel.

FWIW, McGard can still make and send you keys without the card. They just need the year and make of the vehicle with the lock and a picture of the bolt head. I got a replacement key because the one that came with the truck was chewed to hell and would barely grip the lock bolts. Got a new key and now its not an issue. They'll also send you a card with the new key in case you need to order another one later.

Does anyone know if McGard has an updated bolt with key that they sell? Does anyone have a part number? Looking for a few sets. thanks

I use a large C clamp to hold the key on the lock in order to break it loose. You will need to slip one end of the clamp thru one of the wheel openning and brace it against the backside of the wheel. Then place the key on the lock and tighten the clamp down onto the end of the key. Once the key is held firmly against the lock you should be able to turn the key enough to break the lock free.

Do it on a workbench if it feels impossible. Put a little PB Blaster just around the head, try not to get any on the wheel surface, let it soak in overnight.

You can make your own key - just buy cheap tubular wrench of matching size (I don’t remember which one works best), slightly hammer it into the bolt, and it will kind of bend, fill the gaps and work just fine. Use a small file to make some adjustments.
Works for me for quite some time now, including removing bolts after car sat for 12 years.

stainless steel drill bit drills in the bolt very easy. tap it out and order a new bolt from McGard

Or you tip the truck stuck wheel up and fill the entire wheel bolt hole with PB Blaster....like someone had mentioned previous with Blaster.
Check the level every couple of hours and re-top when needed. Then drill out the key bolt and replace with stainless hex bolt... being most of us don't daily drive these trucks in the winter to work, park on the street, and worry about theft of center caps while away.
Somewhere here was the O ring size for the caps, so the center cap pops on and off the wheel easily.... and not rattle.
