Ceramic Coating exhaust

Hey Guys,

I have just spent a few $1000. on ATR SS Headers and X-over, and a 3" PTE DP. I would like to get them coated. The prevailing wisdom says to go w the black Max temp Jet Hot treatment that they do in Mississippi. I guess others have been found to flake off.

My TTA buddy, Frank W., just tried Poly Dyne in Houston on his stock TTA headers. That would be convenient because I could drop off and pick up my precious cargo.

Conley has had work done at Jet Hot and Poly Dyne, and had some problems years ago w the Poly Dyne stuff flaking off on exhaust parts. I will question them about this and whether thay have made any improvements on their process. Lawrence now uses Jet Hot for exhaust stuff and Poly Dyne for internal engine parts.

I was thinking of drilling my hole or holes in the headers for either one or 2 EGT probes before I do the coating. Any input would be appreciated.

My jet hot coating has lasted for years now with no problem. I'd recommend it, can't speak to the other coating though as I've never tried it. HTH

ATR says don't Coat ?

ATR says don't Coat ?

Lewis Strahan just brought up something that I wasn't aware
of - that ATR says don't coat their SS headers because it will
cause them to break down. Here's what I answered Lewis with :

Lewis,

Very good info. I'll call them. But if this were true, then it would be even worse on Carbon Steel headers, so that would say that U shouldn't use it at all.

SS, and 300 SS particularly, has a much higher temp rating than CS. It appears that alot of the SyTy guys have done this, so perhaps I ought to pose this question on the Forum.

Anyone else hear this ?

I was also going to drill 2 holes, one on each side, for EGT probes. Any input on
location before I do a coating ?

I have an EGT bung welded onto each primary pipe about an inch from the flange. My ATR's are jet hot 2000 coated. If you look at the picture gallery on chitownsyty.com I believe I have some photos where you can see the headers installed on the motor, album name is CLONE.

I've got the same coating as clone does and it rocks. hasn't flaked a bit under lots of heat..

Coating exhaust stuff

Coating exhaust stuff

Josh and all,

ATR has no problem w coating the OUTSIDE, just the inside.

Ideally I would like to go w the Max T black Jet Hot, but was
also looking at an outfit called Poly Dyne in Houston. They say
that they now have a 2000°F exhaust coating and I could drive
the parts there and back, w/o the shipping angle.

I was thinking about putting one of those clamp type EGT probes
on each side. With the car apart, I'm not sure where to locate the
2 drilled holes so that I could get at them. Also if I were to go WB
O2 sensor later, does anyone know where that would go ?

Mine are coated inside and out. I've had no problems so far and it's been around 3 years now. I have the EGT bung on the underside of each primary on the drivers side and on top of each primary on the passengers side. Clearance is ample that way and getting to them isn't hard.

As for the WB02 sensor, I'd just throw away the stock sensor and put the WB02 in it's place. None of the chips I run use the 02 sensor for anything anyways.

The August Car Craft did a comparison on Jet-Hot's coatings to regular painted headers...
Jet-Hot points out that realizing the full anti-corrosion benefits of header coatings requires coating the headers on their inside as well as outside surfaces. Not all competitors coat the inside surfaces which isn't good because exhaust gases themselves contain corrosive compounds. If the inside isn't coated, the header eventually rusts through from the inside out.

Coating only the outside can also cause another problem: Mild steel tubing fatigues when it gets too hot. An outer-only thermal barrier blocks the heat from radiating through the exterior metal surface while the lack of an inner barrier exposes the metal to added "trapped" heat. In a scenario reminiscent of that caused by the dreaded "curse of the mummified headers" (outer cloth wraps used by some racers), the result can be literal disintegration of the mild-steel tubing.

Basically the metal gets hotter if only the outside is coated, since it's getting just as much heat from the exhaust gases, but losing less to the outside air.
