I would agree with Daron.

I have a 9" K&N laying on the fenderwell with the Coolant Resevoir in the old Air Filter location.

Spool-up was definitely affected and my top-end (85-100mph) lag disappeared.

Gutting the cat later proved to enhance the above even further.

No wastegate problems with above settings at high altitude anyways...

In a turbo book I had, they showed some turbo internals from a serious road race vehicle that had no filtration for the turbo. The turbo was *only* used for the one race, and they had a rubber film on the turbo parts. No damage to the fins etc, meaning nothing large was sucked in, just the regular road debris & particles. It caused the turbo to fail.

I think a filter on the turbo is necessary on any street driven vehicle, and crucial if you want the turbo to last.

Since it was 50 degrees here in Michigan I decided to install my ATR cold air box. I just had the K&N filter cone laying where the battery once was. It makes sense to me how the atr cold air box is located. You are getting air in from the inner fenderwall [which is out side air] and it is restricted from the blazing hot turbo. I didn't even have to drill any holes. I even found a place for the vacuum ball right underneath.

I seemed to even notice a difference in how the truck ran and built boost. The turbos love cold air. When it is around forty-fifty degrees the truck feels so much more powerful.

I can't say one way or the other whether cold air or a less restrictive intake provides more improvement, as I have done absolutely no testing on it. However, I thought someone posted dyno sheets before and after taking off the crossover tube, and there was about a 10-15hp increase.

Just restating the obvious, but the ideal solution would be to have a short free-flowing intake path leading out to the cool air. Much easier said than done though...

i believe that was mine... unless someone else did dyno's. but that's on richard le's website w/ my ty. however, my ty was running out of tune that day also... so that's why we tried everything, including removing the cross-over tube.

Regarding the air filter dilemna, cut hole in fenderwell,place mesh screen in hole, relocate coolant reservoir(i suggest using separate & smaller one for intercooler & radiator), leave battery in stock location, run 3 inch silicone or plumbing hosing/pipe from turbo to fenderwell hole;I used K&N 8 inch cylindrical filter w/ red wrapping( keeps rain and debris out); then I fabricated a heat shield(cardboard first then aluminum) to shield as best as possible heat from filter;it took some work but works great;I bet if I used a smaller battery(i.e. Optima) in stock location, it would give me more space...

GAST had a dyno meet a year or two ago and we did a comparision on JWallers typhoon. I think it was basically stock (ulitmate, afpr)at the time, and if i remember correctly I think there was about a 40 ft/lbs of torque differnce between stock crossover/air box to nothing at all, no filter nothing. Waller might want to jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves that was the numbers.

Dyno is one thing, with barely any moving air, versus going down a track at full speed.

Ivan did several runs, with and without crossover... didn't have any difference. He did it at KC 98, when his stock turbo & motor truck ran 12.99.

I believe in the cold air idea, but too many people place HUGE emphasis on these modifications, spending hundreds of bucks, wasting so much internet racing time talking about *COLD* air versus *HOT* air... you have to remember you need a LOT of air.. if you think you are blocking off the bad HOT air, you may be just restricting airflow period. Short of hacking the truck up a bit, there isn't that much you can do. Gary Shanock probably has the best deal going. KB's setup makes more power with their cone filter cover *off*...which should be blocking the hot air...showing that it does restrict airflow.

Has anyone thought of a ram air type setup. My truck is in storage (surrounded by many other vehicles)and not really accessible for me to go & measure, but would some type of "box" in the battery area serve a dual purpose. One would be to block out hot underhood air and second, to allow the outside air to ram into the box - sort of pressurize it. The buick guys have an under the bumper inlet, I'll look into fabricating something that is functional and looks nice.

Brian G., what do you recommend for a stock (or basic bolt-on) truck for the intake setup? And is there real benefit of using anything else, over the stock crossover with a K&N in the airbox?
