"Check engine" light, High idle?

TYRODD

My ass. Look at it.
Things became strange on the Ty last saturday, started her up to leave a friends house-horrible idle, barely hanging on. after a few moments, it seemed to fix itself, it drove fine. This happened once more on sunday.

Okay, when leaving school earlier today, the starter seemed to have to crank a hell of a lot more than usual to get things started. drove it home with no problems, well, maybe it was a little doggy, but not too bad. parked the Ty in front of the house, it was idling at about 12 hundo, it usualy idles at about 750-800. It then proceded to throw the check engine light which stayed on for about ten seconds, then went out, Idle stayed the same. Drove to my buddies house, same thing when I parked. On the way back, my tranny didnt seem to slow me down (off throttle) (tranny brake). I went through each gear manually, I seemed to have all gears and it would downshift that way (DUH). Finally, when I parked just now, I was idling at a little over 15K w/check light...WTF?

I am not well seasoned in the computer stuff on these, which may not have anything to do with it all. To me, it seems like idle speed or engine timing, and I am without timing light at the moment. Oh yeah, My tranny/engine is stock.

Any suggestions? This could =suck. Sorry If I didnt emphasize on something, if you need more info, let me know.

Thanks,
RJ

you need to pull the codes to see which one or more is stored in the ECM...search this site for the words paperclip and code and you should find a page with a "how to" on pulling the codes with a paperclip and what they mean....assuming you don't have datamaster?

Truckless. For now.
high idle? guessing it threw a 35 for IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). after pulling your codes, clear the ecm and see if it'll throw 'em again. then go from there. :)

I am studying the trouble codes right right now, I think that may be it, or maybe a vaccum leak.

I am guessing that the high idle speed is not allowing the tranny to downshift because the engine speed will not drop low enough? Could this be correct, if so I will be :D if tranny is OK, trying not to worryabout that though! :)

Thanks,

Okay, Im back (food time) :p . Definetly a code 35, IAC prob. On the sportmachines site it recommends replacing the IAC, can I get this at an auto parts store? Or will/should I go to the GM parts house?

Thanks for the patience, I guess I learn very well from neccessity! I think I should invest in a DM though, as I live nowhere near reasonable driving distance from another SyTyer, Im kinda on my own out here in BFE :x .

Thanks again!,

yah, autoparts stores have them. kinda pricey though. think mine was $80 for a delco unit, but it was a while ago, so i'm not positive. i'd do at least a visible check for vacuum leaks, cracked lines, etc first. then go the IAC route. it's super easy to replace though, just follow the instructions. :)

Well figured I would have to go to Auto Idiots. They cost about the same as O2 sensers then eh? Im pretty sure I dont have a vaccum problem as I popped off a line after the ty sat a while, WOOOOOOSH!, I guess this is an ok test, Ill bust out with some starter fluid just in case though. About the Datamaster, how much are people spending on them these days? Ive got a laptop that I am more than willing to use. I think those DMs are pretty gnaaarly!

Okay, removed throttle body to clean it and R/R the IAC, the pintle on the IAC is stuck completely out, I mean REALLY stuck. This is a pretty good indication that it is bad right? If so, great, I have a new one anyway. And holy shit is my upper intake nasty, looks like tar all over the place, with a little dexcool misted on top (from a slightly leaking IC  ).

get some fuel injector cleaner, find a deserted place, let truck idle, pull a manifold vacuum line of and let it suck in the cleaner, could probably clean your upper intake out a bit.

Yeah, I got a can of upper engine cleaner from the dealership, I just have to make a whole project out of it, you know spark plugs and an oil change(dammit, just changed these both like 2k ago  ). I think sometime soon I need to just take off the entire upper intake and clean it thoroughly, I mean its just that gross ::puker:: . Ill prolly remove the EGR while Im at it. In reference to this, If I remove the EGR, or remove the vacuum line to it, I will probably throw codes (my chip is stock) right? Damn that could get annoying, guess I need a gooder chip eh?

This has been a topic of discussion many a time, but I'd like to reinstate the fact that these trucks are MOTHER F-ING BLACK HOLES!! I lost TWO 5/16 power drivers (hose clamp tool) and the retaining clip for the cruise control cable on the TB last night, Ill never find em either. Ive lost so much other shit under the hood, I need to buy a whole other tool kit to replace the lost tools  . I even have a pickup magnet, a claw retriever two inspection mirrors and a magnetic fender cover (holds parts-good investment). theres got to be a better way, this problem alone probably doubles my repair/tinker time. Maybe I'm just a clumbsy bastard, but only when Im working on the Ty. :)
