Choosing a Radiator

I just ordered a bunch of crap for my Ty today. It has been too long. I am lost on a radiator selection. With my 67gtq, the stock radiator was doing just fine. I am going to be running a remote water pump that would be mounted directly to the radiator. So, I see a lot of fair priced aluminum radiators but they all say rated to 350hp. How accurate is this? I plan to put 825ish through the motor.

Re: Choosing a Radiator

I have a nice dual 1" core Griffin aluminum universal radiator that fits in the stock location just fine.. I welded feet (tabs) on the top and bottom and it uses stock style rubber mounts.. Next time I'm over at my parents house I'll grab the part number for it..

Re: Choosing a Radiator

I use a Griffin circle track radiator. It's smaller than stock, but works fine for me. I had some overheating problems, but I tracked them down to a crappy fan. I had the 3" thick rad, plus the 4" front mount, plus the B&M trans cooler. All working from a single Zirgo 12" fan.

I switched to a single quality Spal 16" fan, and all is well.

BTW, my 25221X Griffin radiator core is 21"w X 16"h with 3" endtanks :2cents:

I'm running a stock replacement radiator with oil and trans cooling unhooked. Volvo fan kit ready available all over ebay. I'm making close to your goals at the crank hp wise and on a hot day mine runs right at 169*. I don't think theirs a need to run bigger rads unless your running high compression. And in a turbo application this is not the norm.

Re: Choosing a Radiator

There are definitely a few mechanical reasons I want to run an aluminum radiator.
1. I have had it up to my ears with the lack of room to filter a turbo with the trans line there.
2. I am running a remote water pump which I think the tank is a great location for.
3. Gives me the freedom to put my connections where I want.

So great info on the subject. I just assumed I'd need something bigger. I think my set up will be pretty slick when all is said and done. Should be a wrenchers dream.

Ever seen a radiator with tanks with no fittings? That would be ideal.

Yes, most of the aftermarket radiator companies make standard units with no fittings for fluid coolers. Mine has no fittings.

Also, as you mentioned, I have my narrow radiator offset to the driverside for clearance. That gives me a 6" wide path directly from the grille into the turbo inlet. I bent up a little cold air box to isolate the filter from engine heat.

Good luck. I cant wait to see the results.
