Cigarette lighter for power source

On what seems like most of the trucks I have been in, the lighter doesn't seem to have enough power to supply my inverter for my laptop charger. On my TY, it always worked great but on the wife's Ty it just doesn't cut it. Is there any reason why I can't run a 10 or 12 gauge wire straight to the battery for that?

Re: Cigarette lighter for power source

I run my power inverter from mine with no problems what so ever.....but if you wanted to a secondary power source wouldn't hurt. You could do a relay ran off the alt.....

X2, no prob running my inverter off the lighter. Sure you could run a wire from the bat. Just put a fuse in it.

Re: Cigarette lighter for power source

My inverter caused my fuse to blow a number of times and i ended up not using it.

It was trying to provide power to a UK adaptor but that shouldn't have made a difference. I guess it depends on what current draw you're expecting. Mine may have been higher.

I hadn't thought of running a wire from the battery though. I like that idea, fuse and all.

Not that the truck ever drives far enough for me to run out of battery juice :D

I was having fuse issues as well. Switched to genuine Buss and problem disappeared.

I use the taps on installs all the time, there are also ones for illumination and accessory position. Makes installing extra gauges very easy. You can still get the oem taps from GM, the aftermarket or pull assorted ones at the junk yard. Even color coded like oem.
