*CLUNK*, no OD.

Ok, going to lunch today... Turned away from a stop sign and hit the gas. Hard, but not beating on it... Maybe 100' down the road, it makes this huge nasty *CLUNK* like something fell out through some other part. It starts coasting like it's in neutral. Pull over and start looking underneath for the missing parts, amidst a storm of four letter words. Everything looks ok. No ATF splattering or chunky parts or anything.

Get back in and it acts like N when in OD. Drop it into D and it drives. Seems to be perfectly fine. Get up to speed and try OD. It works. Drive to the next stop sign just fine in OD. TC still locks up, regular RPM vs. speed... At the next stop sign, it makes it into the intersection and does its N impression again. Drop it into D and it continues without a problem. Get back out of town and up to speed, and switching to OD works again. After the last corner, I try it out a little. Punching it in OD for a downshift, it slips again. D works fine. After backing back out of my parking spot, OD doesn't work to pull back in. D does.

What happened?

The clunk scared me. I really was expecting to see pieces of something in the road... The fact that OD works at speed, but not at all from a stop confuses me. Everything else seems to work fine. It seems I can use it like this, but I'm worried about broken pieces breaking other stuff.

If I do need a rebuild (which I really don't have the cash for at the moment), I'd like some advice. I really only need stock-level. The biggest mod I have planned for a long time is an Ultimate (which is probably still a ways off even). I don't mind paying a few bucks extra for heavy-duty parts, but I don't want to pay more for the tranny than I've paid on the truck so far...

As for the differences in SyTy trannies, could I give a list or the actual parts to a local tranny guy? Should that be enough to get the job done, or am I basically screwed unless I have a SyTy owner do it? I haven't seen many responses on price questions... What am I looking at for a good quality, stock level rebuild?

At least I got it all shined up last week... Stupid trucks...

not stock
This is the exact same thing that I experienced. Only I lost 2nd and OD. New tranny time :x Contact John Waller or Brian Hartman, and have some $$ ready to blow.

Bill sorry to hear your misfortune. I have a Jasper transmission and love it. I would reccomend it to anyone. It really drives nice. I can dig up the reciept if you want it. I believe it was around 3,000 with install. The dealership by my house does excellent work too. They sealed my transfer case and my tranny pan. I believe the transmission was just remanufactured by Jasper.

P.S. Be sure to talk to Merk about his expierience with the transmission . He might be able to guide you a little better.

if your looking for stock your best bet is going to be a gm cert sy/ty tranny, youll avoid the bs associated with shops trying to build a sy/ty tranny, and at least it will be under warranty for the next 40,000 miles, i think they run about 1,150 from your local gm dealer

From Bill Anthony at Roadmaster Transmission per chitownsyty.com...

A stock reman unit runs about $1833.00 plus hard part damage that is not rebuildable.

Hard parts are drums, planets, pump, etc.

HD units are more money.

If you have any questions please call me at 847-352-4557

It sounds like the input sprag or input drum are blown. DO NOT DRIVE ANY FURTHER than you really need to.

Thanks

Bill Anthony

I was also wondering about an actual stock replacement. I've got over 120k, so this seems to have done ok. Are there any major problems with them that I might run into, that I could avoid with an aftermarket? Is there a part number or anything for that GM tranny? I don't trust anyone with parts for this thing... I do have a friend-of-a-friend who's a GM mechanic. Might be able to work something out with him too... Is installing and removing it the same as a 4x4 S-10? My regular mechanic's already done that for me...

Hey Bill,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. Look here on how to get it out. I got to where it only took me about 1 hour 15 minutes to get it out. You'll want to replace your torque converter also. Stick with a stock torque converter unless you want to run huge tranny coolers to keep temps down.

click on removal part 1 and 2.
Print them out and give them to your mechanic. Unless he likes standing under your truck for hours, he'll follow it. Couldn't be all that different for a 4x4 Jimmy. Make sure when you get your other tranny that you specify one for your specific year. I spoke with another owner that found out the hard way that the transmission to tranfer case adaptors come in two varieties. The wrong one gets things up HIGH. Like stuff hitting the tranny tunnel high.

Hey Bill, if you come out the shop on saturday for the meet we can talk about what needs to be redone in the trans and how much it should cost to remove and put back in. I do have a lot of info for you on why not to be a gm certified rebuild or brand new trans as well as Brian hartman tell you the same thing.
