Coating the turbo?

Frank

Since I plan to have my KB headers and RPM downpipe coated in the near future, I figured that I might as well do the new turbo at the same time. Should I plan on giving the coater the whole turbo or just the portion I want coated? Do not imagine that baking the whole turbo will hurt it.

The local coater, SQI, says they will ceramic coat the headers only in black or blue. Anyone try blue?

Also, what about coating inside of headers? Was planning on having inside done but just read that coating could flake off and damage turbo?

Take the turbine housing off and take it to the coaters. I personally wouldn't trust anyone there to remove and replace it.

We've never had a problem with flaking but our guy is quite anal about making sure it won't happen. I can't comment if everyone is that way. :D

My headers, crossover, exhaust side and intake side of turbo are all ceramic coated inside and out. No I have not run it yet but feel very strongly it will be ok. I have been using coated pistons for years. If it doesn't come off them, why would it come off anything else? I am sure there will be people posting that it will come off and ruin the turbo. Has this happened to anybody? exactly how much does a ceramic flake weigh? is it that heavy that on a collision it will take a blade out? I am sticking with the theory, done right there will be no problems. All I can say is before you do something like this, research ceramic coaters for their opinions.

Black or Blue only? hmm I just got my KB headers back and they are coated and apear chrome like, or maybe more like a polished look, sure has put a compleet halt on the rusting process, now wish I was smart enough to remember to take the crosss over pipe with me, doh.

I have pics if you need to see them.

Email me the pictures. They also coat with chrome appearance ceramic. But I think that temps will "only" stand up to 1500 degrees vs. 2000 for black or blue. That's why I am leaning towards blue (or black). Maybe someone else knows for sure.

Thanks,

Frank

damn thats nice dean...especially on the upper intake...is that coating resistant of our egt temps? what brand is that?

Upper looks very nice. Which coating is that? I wish I had a vibratory polisher to do that type of coating.

I just coated two complete downpipes, exhaust housings, and crossovers.
I used Turbo X from Techline in black. It comes in black or blue so I bet that is what your coaters are using. It covers well but surface prep is critical so that it doesn't peel.

It looks like cermakrome.
Whatever brand it is, none of the silver looking coatings are rated as high as the flat colors (black, blue, white, titanium).

Years ago . I had some stuff done in Techline coatings. I think it was pretty worthless.

Really thin ,and started to flake off pretty quick. Mostly probably due to the guy that put it on , but a risk.

I did some other stuff in Swain Coating. I liked the Swain Coating. A lot thicker .A lot more durable.

Some heat shields I had made up for our USCC GT-R

Some other pictures . On the motor.

Now I am going to coat the headers , turbine housing , and use the other heat shields.

The more heat energy you can keep in the exhaust . The more energy to spin the turbine . The less energy wasted.

So what your saying is that we should try to keep the heat in and not try to dissapate it.

Are you serious ?

The more heat that is dissapated is just wasted energy.

The more heat you keep the exhaust the more energy you have to power the turbine.

The more energy you keep in the exhaust the faster the exhaust flow.

You want to keep heat in the exhaust.

Dissapate heat - thats the other side of the motor.

Ok just checking. This is the company im going to to do my coating with.

The ceramachrome stuff will NOT standup to high heat. The high temp black (2000 degree) is what you need then. I had the ceramachrome stuff on my ATR headers, and it got that 'fuzzy' look after running it for a while, and was cracking off in several spots after several weeks/months. It works great on cast stuff, especially exhaust housings. IMO - do the ceramachrome on cast manifolds, exhaust housings, downpipes (not quite as hot as pre-turbo). Do the extreme high temp black on tubular manifolds.

Yes i have stock exhaust manifolds, sorry to get off track, but I got a question that I want to ask you about the ultimate. Can you get on AIM.

FWIW

dean told me that the upper intake was actually polished rather than coated...very nice job IMO...it will be very interesting to see how the coating on the headers holds up...he also offered to give the source out if needed...[/thumbs up]
