I think i am going to take my axle to a shop and have them put new bearings in.

What about putting in just a LSD, would that be as expensive as a Locker??

Yea, thinking about doing that when I get mine rebuilt... still waiting for the diff for the rear end... Eaton limited slip with carbon plates!

Not a HUGE update by any stretch, but a couple of shiney parts showed up this week while I was at work..


Going to install this in the rear brake lines and remove the stock prop valve altogether......

For those unfamiliar with the LS1/Gen3 motor world. There are 2 premier tuners out right now that offer FULL CONTROL over the PCM.. HPtuners and EFILive's FlashScan. I went with the Flashscan (Pictured above) for the reason that it has the ability to completely recover a PCM from a crash. Also the 'BLACK BOX' gatalogging option is HELLA cool.. You dont even have to have the laptop in the vehicle in order for it to datalog. U can download it later into the laptop. You re-flash the PCM (ECM equivalent for an LS1) instead of pulling chips out all the time.

Also a very VERY cool option, it has the ability to accept 2 separate inputs (WBO2, EGT or ???) and incorporate that into the datalog and graph accordingly. This setup is awesome !

Special thanks to Eric @ www.turbotime.us for the quick service and shipping. I am somewhat concerned about using the turbo... As Ben Stiller would put it.... Its GI-NORMOUS.. This thing is is a monster at 44# dead weight and bigger than a basketball.. Its going to be hard enough to get the LS6 under the hood, much less a turbo of this size.. It may force my hand to run twins.. Just depends at this point.. I hope to get a chance to get into the garage tomorrow and actually start playing with some of this stuff... Up next are headers .. I wanted to snap a pic of the mandrel bend tubes but they are coated in oil to prevent rusting and I dont think the wife would appreciate it on the living room floor.. Perhaps tomorrow once I can lay them out on the garage floor.

Wahoooooooo More progress, hoping things will move along steadily now.. I've tackled some smaller stuff related to the motor..

I ordered and received a Turbo Specific Camshaft from Futral Motorsports. Here's the cam card:

Also received ARP Head Studs, Cometic Head Gaskets, Ferrea 6000 Series Valves (oversized @ 2.02 and 1.60), titanium retainers and locks and lastly, Comp Cams 918 Springs.

The 6.0L heads and valves are off at the machine shop as we speak, I should be able to pick them up the end of this week. then assemble the valvetrain and throw them on the block in place of the 5.7L heads. (this lowers the compression ratio to a more boost friendly ratio).

The Katech Rod bolts:

These lil buggers are spendy ass pieces, $160+ shipped for 16 bolts but they are supposed to be the best.. They add a little insurance in the bottom end, from what I have read, the LSx's motors are really good except for the rod bolts (In realistic applications)..The Katech Rod bolts are installed and torqued:

The engine was rotated upside down for cam installation, it makes it easier to deal with the roller lifters not getting in the way..

Once I get the heads back from Indy Cylinder Head its time to throw them on and then the motor will basically be done.

Tomorrow I hope I get a chance to tear into the 4L80e.. I have a bunch of parts I wanna throw at that !!

I cant believe how simple this transmission was to tear down.. Its been a while since I was into the last tranny (TH350) but I swear I dont recall it being this simple.. There wasnt even a single swear word used !! Obviously the buildup wont be as simple or as quick as the tear down because there are things to check/inspect along the way, but for a first timer, I was pretty happy with <3hr teardown (and that includes hanging that heavy biotch in the holder fixture).

Since I have your attention, whats your thoughts on the 5 pinion planetaries ?? I have a 4 pinion planetary in the transmission I'd really rather NOT use again so I am contemplating an upgrade... (dont really want to spend the $$, but if I gotta I will)

You don't need the 5 pinion planetaries but if your 4 pinion planetaries are damaged, you can go with the 5 pinion since you'll be paying the money for a new planetary set anyway. Your trans is a late model unit. I can tell from the pin in the case that keeps the OD backing plate from rotating. Your unit came the thicker planetaries already. The problem area will be the input shaft and the clutch hub.

Your pice on the Blue/Red kit would be lower because you've already got the syty output shaft.

If your really concerned about the planetaries, just have your geartrain cryo'd. "Geartrain" meaning the last big heavy deal you pull out of the case with a pair of vise grips that has the planetaries, low roller clutch, sun gear shaft, main shaft, all of that stuff.

I thought I'd add something for anyone else reading this, if you do one planetary, you have to do both. Also, these planetaries are also the thicker design. These will be a drop in for Todd, but if you are using an older model, you'll need to change some things.

Todd, if you need any help, let me know. One thing to look for that most guys overlook on a rebuild is the center support bushing. Look at this pic:

See that really long bushing on the top left? That's the one that goes in the center support. Feel down in your center support for for wear rings. If you feel any indentation. I mean ANY, replace that bushing or you'll burn up 2nd and 3rd gear clutches in short order.
Put the main gear shaft in the sun gear shaft. Force it from side to side. If you feel ANY play, replace the sun gear shaft bushings. Make sure you use the sun gear shaft bushings that have the lube reliefs cut in them since you have a solid main shaft(no hole drilled down the middle). 3rd row down, the last 2 on the right are exactly how the bushings should look that you need to use with a SOLID core main shaft. You MAY need to use a small brake cylinder hone to hone these bushings to fit your shaft. You want them tight, but it shouldn't leave any grooves in the bushing or stick.
