Coolant Temp Gauge issues

I've been chasing an issue with the coolant temperature gauge doing weird things and initially making me go crazy thinking the Ty is overheating. I think the coolant temperature sensor that goes in the driver's side head or the connector is going bad. The symptom is with the Ty warmed up the temperature reading is normal and the gauge will instantly peg the max reading and the "check guages" light starts to flash. Occasionally it will go back to a normal reading and all is fine but eventually will repeat and peg the max again. Since this started I've burped the system by jacking the front end up with the radiator cap off and the it idling for 30ish minutes several times. I've replaced the thermostat and water pump. I've also pressure tested the cooling system up to 15lbs. with and without the thermostat looking and listening for leaks and haven't found any. Also the pressure never drops.

This was happening when I first bought the Ty but it was because the intercooler pump failed and wasn't circulating coolant in that system. Resolved that issue by replacing the intercooler pump.

This time I'm positive the intercooler pump is still working and pretty certain the system has no air bubbles but still get the issue. I've used a laser thermometer to confirm the thermostat housing is at or below 180 degrees the thermostat is rated for. Also the upper intercooler is usually hovering around 100 degrees so I'm confident the Ty is not overheating.

I'm assuming there is a sensor somewhere in the intercooler system considering I was getting the same issue when the intercooler pump was bad. Has anyone had this issue and if so what was your fix?

Re: Coolant Temp Gauge issues

The Intercooler doesn't have a coolant sensor and is separate from the engine coolant. The gauge coolant sensor screw into the drivers side cylinder head. The ECM coolant sensor is in the lower intake near the front passenger side.

You can datalog your truck to see what the actual temperature is to make sure you're not overheating. Make sure the wire going to the sensor in the head on the driver side isnt damaged and making contact with ground.
