could this cause a rough idle? see pics

Yeah so my truck's developed a rough idle since I haven't been driving it at all in the last year/ years and nothings changed so I pulled the cap and installed anew one a few weeks ago but no change. I redid the plugs and the wires, fuel filter and no dice.

Remembered seeing some rust somewhere... thought about it and thought about then remembered where.

Just ran outside and pulled the dizzy cap before I crash in my bed and I have this............

So could this cause a shitty or somewhat choppy idle? no error codes for iac or anything.

Also I can't find the dizzy hold down bolt anywhere.. do I really need to remove the upper intake to get to it? Say no.. my heart is not into this truck anymore and I have no time which is why im doing this at 1 am LOL

thanks for the help

I would say yes. Not so much because of the rust you're talking about but because of the rust you almost can't see on the module. The bolt is just about straight ahead (toward the radiator) but under the lip of the base where the cap sits. Loosen but don't remove then slide the hold-down forward to remove the dist. I use a 1/4 drive 9/16 wobble socket and a long ext. Come in slightly on the pas side. I've also been able to get on it with a short 9/16 box from underneath on the pas side. Others have used 3/8 drive wobble. Still others have had luck with a std dist wrench.

Reinstall is fun because you can't see if you have the hold-down up on the dist or not. I found my dist just sitting there with the bolt and hold-down loose the first time I set the timing years ago.

I generally can get a short Racheting wrench in under the fuel rail on the passenger side and lossen it enough to slide the hold down off and pull dist out. It short motions and ur like a snake but it worked well for me.

My Sy had a rough idle from day one. Dealer said it was normal. But having rust in the distributor is usually not a good thing.

Don, thanks for the info sir, much appreciated

hmmm ralph I think you should come buy it

Brassmonkey,

Yeah syty's generally did have a little rough idle from the factory.. it was to help with emissions I believe but this is kind of like a slight miss almost like the dizzy cap or plugs are old but they are brand new now.

I have a minty fresh one I got from ken so i'm probably going to swap the dizzy next day i get some time but didn't want to pull the upper intake if I didn't have to.

i have had a rough idle after i put my exhaust and intake on.my distributer had some rust too so i replaced it. idled crappy still, i have spent stupid amount of time trying to fix this problem plugs wires cap rotors modules. gm runs them too lean i fixed it by unplugging the o2 sensor and cranking the fuel pressure until it idled perfect. u can,t even feel the the motor now when it idles. i have a wide band and it sits around 13.3 at idle.the wide open is around 11.5. not emmisions friendly but it si so much nicer sitting at a light than wondering if it is going to stay running

Went to yank the dizzy tonite and couldn't pull it out because either the knock sensor or the oil pressure sensor (don't know which one) is in the way and I didn't feel like dealing with another thing so sprayed compressed air on the dizzy and most of the rust came off. I swapped the module anyway and put everything back together. Idled like crap still and decided to up the fuel pressure a little and it helped some with the idle but if your not familiar with these trucks and hoped into it. You would think the truck's missing or has issues lol

The folks at Advanced/PepBoys or any other parts store can test the module you removed for free. See if that was your issue. Should test it a couple times to make sure it's warmed up, Will help you trouble shoot if that didn't solve the rough idle, Pete

That would be the oil pressure sender. You can probably turn that slightly to get it out of the way without causing a leak. Like others have said, rough idle? It's not a bug it's a feature... How does it run otherwise? Does it start fairly easily? If the rough idle is, shall we say, random, meaning it doesn't have a dead miss or something, and if it runs OK off idle, then I'd be inclined to let it go. Do you have a scan tool? DataMaster or?

Put in the auto zone unit,I have fixed many trucks idle issues with it

Yeah have a good dizzy to install but I didn't want to screw around with the oil pres sensor too you know.

The slight rough idle isn't bothering me too much now and it seems ok but is it normal to idle lower while in drive then when in park? I think it's the chip dicking with this because with previous stocker and pitbull I don't remember ever having this problem.

I have datamaster but it's not connecting on my little hp book so im going to use another laptop and see what she says when I get some time.
