diffuser plate upgrade possible?

please take it from an iggy on this subject. I am just wanting to know if would be possible to increase turbo efficiency by modifying the diffuser plate with strategically machined slots like the ones on brake rotors. If so, it would be groovy. The name of the game is to increase air flow characteristics. They probably already exist an I just haven't seen it done.

Right...
diffuser plate in the stock turbo is slope shaped and smooth. Can grooves on this part of the turbo housing
machined to follow the flow path of air improve the turbo's ouput? As in making a bottle neck more gradual into a straigh passage? Excuse my lack of terminology here. I was thinking it would, but maybe not.

Diffusers on the turbo inlet are used to get rid of compressor surging. the stock turbo doesn't have that issue. I have heard of turbo buicks using a 'tornado' to resolve this issue.
