Does this sound like a typical dead/dying window motor?

You push the button to roll the window up and it goes 3-4inches and slows down to a stop. If you let go and push again it bearly moves. If you give it a while and then push it goes about 1 inch or less. You get the idea :D

Should I just go ahead and replace the motor?

That's exactly how mine went. There R some instructions on the list - it's not that simple a job. I added some to that list. U may want to search for those instructions and my addendum (under my name).

The easiest way I have found to replace them, is to actually buy a used one with the bracket still on it, if you don't have access to a die grinder and a rivet gun. Either way it's not tooo hard, just a little time consuming.

Get one from AutoZone, they’ll give lifetime warranty. Drill out rivets and replace with bolts and nuts, use lock tide or grooved washer. Worked for me, took about 2 hours.
Also you can reuse warranty if other motor go out.

Here's the "how to" I used on my mom's Olds Achieva before she traded it in for a Taurus :-? : http://www.tyclone.com/windowmotor/index.htm

On my mom's car, I had to use a die grinder to get the rivets out as they were just spinning in the door panel. I seem to recall someone used a super size cable tie to hold the recoil spring in place rather than drilling a hole in it and using a bolt. Either way, you DON'T want that cutting loose on you  . I work in the plastics industry and nylon is some tough stuff but, I prefer the bolt route for safety. I need to do my passenger side window too. I will prolly wait until it completely dies...

Rex,

It sounds like you will need to replace the motor. However there maybe an acceptable short time resolution to get you to a convent time for the motor replacement. Try spraying some liquid lubricant with Teflon in the window groves. This will relieve some of the restriction on the window. This is not the cure, just a way to get you by for a couple of week ends.

Good luck.

Thx all, well the motor is officially dead. It makes a click thats it.
I did get a new motor from PepBoys. The wheel at the end of the arm looks a little abused too, so I might have to replace that.
I opened up the door panel and tried to drill out the first rivet but my drill bit broke :) I'll try again maybe tomorrow with a better/bigger drill bit. A grinder sounds a bit easier, is it?

EDIT: I think I'll try this http://www.a1electric.com/install/s10/s10-3.htm
hehe just found this page, that would explain why my bit broke ;)

Thanks for the new link to power window motor replacement ::thumbsup:: ! Very well written with lots of pics. When dealing with those rivets, I prefer to use a die grinder or a Dremel with a fiberglass reinforced cut off wheel. Because the shape of the rivet can make it difficult to hold onto. Definitely use two hands to hold the tool though or else you may end up with grind "streaks" if it gets away from you. However, they are relatively soft and the potential of the wheel grabbing is very low.

Always puzzled me why the passenger side window motor seems to go first. Afterall, it gets used less than the driver's side does. Guess it's one of those quirks of owning a syty like the wipers wiping once occasionally when you use the turn signal... HTH's

Window motors

Mike,

I've always had the Drivers side window motor go 1st - 3-4 times on diff. cars. R U sure U have owned your car from the start ? Maybe someone had already done the Drivers' side. In fact, that's the only one that I have ever had go bad, as one might expect.

Rex,

I hope this helps a little with the removal of the old motor. I have done several of these and none are easy. This S15 is easer that Camaros.

I found it easer if you use a nail punch and punch out the hard center of the pop-rivet first. Sometimes this makes the whole back of the rivet just break off and most of your work is done. Do not forget to fish out the left over pieces from inside your door (unless you like the rattle that it will create).

HTH!.

Good Luck on this job.

Rex,

I found my addendum to the Tyclone window instructions - Oct. 26, 2002 in Mod/Repair. I think it will be useful.

Maybe I don't know how to use the "Search" function, but for me it doesn't work worth a damn. I dialed in "Window Motor" in the Mod/Repair Forum and my name and it didn't bring it up. Then when U try to page back to that date, U have to go one page at a time and it takes forever.

There must be a better way ! I've taking to copying everything for this reason.

My 20K syclone is doing the same thing on the passenger side. Drivers side has not been touched yet.

Ummm, I never wanna do that again :D
Thanks all! It works perfect with the new motor! I nailed out the rivet centers and drilled them out with a large bit. I released the spring so the whole thing was more managable, changed motors and put thespring back. It was NOT as easy as it sounds. :p But now I feel good its all over hehe
Thanks again all!

i just did my motor today... woulda taken me about an hour, but i forgot to buy some 1/4" bolts before i started... overall i didnt really think the job was difficult, kinda messy, that effn grease gets everywhere!

my only complaint... the replacement motor i got is noisy as all hell!!! wtf?!?!?! hopefully the noise will subside as it gets broken in, if not, i may end up rippin that bastard outta there. it sounds normal when its rollling the window up, but is loud and grindy sounding like an old electric can opener, on the way down.

RAISE THE DEAD!!! ;) jk
The driver side is doing the same thing as this 2003 prob. so it's time to replace. I ordered a new motor from NAPA yesterday so I should get it today. Does anyone know where to buy the original GM 1/4" rivets and 1/4" rivet gun? My rivet gun says "Uses 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16".

EDIT: Oh yea, I know you can use bolts but I really want to use those strong rivets instead. Just FYI. :)

EDIT2: Would this do for the gun? http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-...and-riveter-with-collection-bottle-66422.html

you can get the big rivet gun cheap at either harbor freight or northern tool, can't remember which, but I am going to be 70 next week so who cares, oh btw I held the whole mess together with a vise grip to hold the spring and duct tape to hold up the window
