Eating 3 Bar MAPs ....

Well this is the second 3 bar MAP sensor I have killed in about 2-3 months(if that) of driving time. Both were within about a month or so of installing and running on Code59. The first one was not too long after Homecoming last year. Both Dig and UR50SLO helped with the initial setup and base tune. All seemed fine until I started it one day and tried leaving a store parking lot. This time I was driving and coasting slowly through a turn and it just went out. Both times I ended up pulling the 3 bar and replacing with a 2 bar, pulled the Ostrich and put just the Pitbull chip in and it ran enough to get me back home. I haven't had any issues with 2 Bars going just the 3's. I am fairly certain that it isn't the Ostrich due to the fact that I can use it with a 2 bar bin and it runs fine, and a 3 bar bin and a fresh 3 bar MAP and it also runs fine. Is anybody having similar problems? TIA for any help.....

This is a good one. Never heard of this before. Not even "I" have had this problem

Haha.....I'm lost on this issue right now. It's late and my head is not completely getting around it at this moment. I wrote off the fist one as a bad MAP and didn't think too much of it. I don't see any other issues that I can think are related. I figured if it was a voltage or boost spike (something along those lines) it should be effecting more then just the 3 bar MAPs......

If you getting voltage spikes if from the ECM. Boost spike arent killing it, it would kill your engine first. I would check the wiring going to the MAP sensor, first.

I mentioned boost and voltage due to the only two connectors on the MAP. I was and am fairly certain there wasn't any boost spikes that caused the 3 bars to go due to my engine still functioning and having not blown up. :D. The voltage spikes I am doubtful on because it is only effecting the 3 bars, NOT the 2 bars. Could it be Ostrich/Code59 related?? I have had the truck running on a 2 bar bin, but not for any great legnths of time. When I am, using the 2 bar MAPs, I am typically using the Pitbull chip not a 2 bar bin in the Ostrich. All the wires at the MAP sensor visually appear fine.

I can test the sensor if you still have it.

I still have both of the 3 Bars ....

You said the 3 bar MAP are dying after 1 month, but it seems like you haven't run the 2 BAR map for that long.

No, the Ostrich/Code59 aren't causing the problem. The ECM is providing the 5V Power/Gnd connections and recieving the the MAP signal from the sensor. You can a put a meter on your ECM power connections. I guess it could be bad luck the 3 bar map are dying, but those bad luck coincidence are a rarity.

I would test the sensor if possible. It shoudl read about 1.67V with out any pressure source.

The most likely issue, you have a wiring issue that by unplugging the wire its affecting(correcting) the connection or the ECM is affect the MAP sensor. I had a fellow sytyer have probelms with his ignition wiring and it was a mouse chewed partly threw some wires at the back of engine.

Just a thought killed two on mine-was oil-slight blowby on boost.

At least I'm not the only one killing them, no matter what the cause. ;)

Yeah I said "this is the second 3 bar MAP sensor I have killed in about 2-3 months(if that) of driving time." Sorry if I was misleading or confusing with the information in any way....my truck has seen far more time under a 2 Bar then a 3 Bar.

I am not leaning towards "bad luck" myself either. Most of the problem I have come across on my Ty have been fairly simple and easy fixes. Those kind of fixes you go  over. Luckily I have been fixing more of someone else's mistakes and haven't made too many of my own (that I know of yet). I have visually inspected the wires and see nothing wrong with the naked eye. I guess I will have to check more thoroughly when the rain stops here. I will try and check both 3 Bars, be it here or swinging over to Wade's for some help from him.

My whole concern was why I was chewing up 3 bar MAPs and not the 2's.

Re: Eating 3 Bar MAPs ....

I wonder if the atr chip is to blame. Maybe a stock memcal is in order?

Anybody got any input on this?

Ostrich was the problem, at least this time it was. I swapped the 3 bar under warranty and tried a new one and same issue. Today I imported the same bin that was in the Ostrich and she fired right up and drove like normal. Why .... I have no idea. :dunno:

So the 3 bar MAP was fine? Don't quote me my words and call me out if you can't diagnose the problem.

I stand by my advice, an emulator and/or code 59 will not 'eat 3 Bar MAPs'

Are you spraying alky? Where is your map mounted?

No spray of any kind as of yet. The MAP is mounted in the stock location. I will be moving it sooner then later hopefully when I buy a new pigtail with longer wires.

Settle down sparky, nobody was calling you out. Yeah, call out someone who is trying to help me. I can diagnose my own problems, thank you, but when the problem goes outside the realm of normal thinking/logic and all diagnostic options have been tried, its time to find and take a new approach. I figured I started at it too much and need to step back for a second or two. I appreciate everyone's advice and suggestions on this or any other problems I run across. If I didn't want the help, I wouldn't ask for it. Nothing about this "problem" has made any sense to me, or the others I have talked to about it which is why I posted it up. The three bar MAP wasn't the problem this time from what I found. It wasn't the wiring either as suggested either from everything I found or didn't find. The first time (last year after HC) it was a bad 3 bar MAP, or at least installing a new one made the issue go away. It appears this time the problem was the emulator/Ostrich. I didn't check the 3 bar, I just went and swapped it. It was faster and easier so that is why I went that approach.I don't know how or why as I mentioned and apparently no one else does. I seems as if this time the Ostrich dumped the bin or some how corrupted it.

Re: Eating 3 Bar MAPs ....

Sound like 3 possible problems.

1) Battery in Ostich is going out so it loses the tune after awhile
2) Bad ostrich
3) Bad ECM/Voltage feedback problem - bad ground or ecm

Burned chips will not be affected by voltage feedback, emulators will and it can make them scramble the tune in the ostrich. If it happens again and uploading a new bin fixes it, then it something in the emulator or ecm causing it.

Thank you for the feedback....what is the typical life of the battery in the Ostrich?? Moates' website says I should never need to replace it. I was under the impression it was a fairly long time if not forever.

The ECM is fairly new, it was replaced a few years ago. I will check the ground and I will continue to go over the wiring on the truck.
Last year Ostrich was brand new and a few weeks/months after install is had the first problem. I just chalked it up to a bad MAP after I ran a few tests all pointing to that. Same battery is in it as last year when I had this most recent issue except this time it appears to be directly ostrich related. In both instances the problem happened fairly quickly after the start of usage of the Ostrich. Maybe its just all coincidental .....;)
