Engine Coolant Temp Sensor

I am having a issue with my truck running rich at start-up. While searching I found a article on the coolant temp gauge. It is a good write-up and gives voltages for testing your sensor. While it doesn't help me with my current issue. I thought that I would share. Maybe someone will find it useful.

Did you find the issue? Is it continuing to run rich after open loop?

Re: Engine Coolant Temp Sensor

I haven't had the chance to look into the issue for the last few days. But I have spent some time prior to this thread looking into the issue.

A little run down on some of the things that have been going on and things that I have tried so far:

I will start first with: My engine has just been rebuilt again. Has 200 miles on it at this time. On the previous rebuild. That only lasted about 2k miles. The bearing went out. On this one I did all the work myself. Excluding the machine work.

At start-up on this engine. There was a small engine fire. Caused by a missing o-ring on the fuel line. Another lesson learned. It was not a bad fire. But the engine wiring harness had to be reworked, map,EGR sensors replaced, the coil replaced. And thats about it.

After those repairs were complete. The next start-up. The engine ran rich all the time. After talking to DaveP. I checked the voltages on the map sensor connector and found them not to be what should have been at. The cause of this turned out to be the ground wire not being connected to the control box for the Alky control. With this ground wire not connected. The Alky control box feeds 12 volts on the wire from it to the map sensor. Let me assure you that really screws up your map sensor. Another lesson I learned.

After connecting the alky control ground wire the truck is running well. With the only known issue being that the engine seems to be rich at start-up. I still am not sure of if it just does it from a cold start or later starts. I had thought it didn't at the cold start. But now I know it does. I am not really noticing smoke from the tail-pipe. But the water that comes from the tail-pipe after it dries off the ground. There is a black sooty type residue.

I have a AFR gauge an a FP gauge. And they are showing no problems.

I pulled the fuel rail from the intake with the injectors still attached to the rail. After running the fuel pump no fuel leaked by the injectors. I even sent them off and had the injectors checked to see if any were leaking. Was told all were good. I have since talked to Jeff Scott and it seems I should have maybe ran my fuel pump longer that I did on my own test for a leaking injector. I will re-due this test and see what happens.

I will add. I am using code$59 for tuning. So far I have always ran in open loop.

Anyone have any ideas?

What are your afr's cold on startup? What are they at when the truck is warmed up? Your truck should run ol and rich on cold startup until it warms up. How come you are running open loop all the time?

Re: Engine Coolant Temp Sensor

I am trying to get my AFR to be around 13.5 at idle. My truck idles much smoother in that area. At start up the AFR is around 12 until it runs a minute or two.

The rich at start up is much better right now. It least for today it was great.

I am still running open loop because my tune is not were I want it yet. When it gets closer I will set to closed loop. Hopefully soon.

Mine runs 12's AFR when cold. I have my idle in the 13.8-14.0 at idle. I think it's normal for AFR ratio to be a little rich while engine coolant temp is cold.

Same AFR's on my truck, maybe even a little richer at idle. My truck does not like to ilde at 14.7 AFR, it needs to be richer for a good idle. I am also running open loop all the time. I just haven't gotten around to tuning the closed loop AFR's, and my truck is running very well the way it is.
