Engine removal

Hey guys,
Any advice on pulling the engine out of a Typhoon?
I am thinking I need to pull the drive shaft and loosen the transmission
So I can wiggle things around after removing the bolts on the flex plate .
Removing the hood and the core support. Any advice would be great!

Re: Engine removal

It's a very tall engine, depending on how far you tear the intake down. If you're using a mobile hoist you may max it out if the truck is on jackstands. I like to disconnect everything with the truck on stands, then set it back down to do the final lift out.

I like to disassemble as little as possible. Definitely remove the hood and possibly the radiator, or at least the fans.

Lots and lots of white smoke!!! I also want to go with a custom can and new heads.
I have all the parts so it's tear down time!!

Re: Engine removal

I do it a bit different naturally...:rotf:

I take the motor apart further. Ex manifolds are off, makes it easy to get at the motor mounts. Upper intake off because I have a custom lift plate that bolts in its place. I'll get a pic if you'd like. If you leave the ex manifolds in place remove the crossover.

If you remove the motor mounts and lower the motor a bit (it won't go far) you can reach those two upper bellhousing bolts. You'll have to support the trans.

If the AC is still charged you can remove the compressor and leave it there attached to the lines. Yes it can be done, I've done it.

Dist comes out. Don't think it can be done otherwise.

Wheel wells come out. Core support stays but the radiator comes out. Hood comes off, I don't think it can be done otherwise and only takes a few minutes. Makes everything else MUCH easier.

I also remove the pulley portion of the front damper. I also remove the AC compressor bracket and the alt/power steering bracket. Save yourself a ton of swear words and just go to Harbor Freight and buy the puller/installer for the power steering pulley. I leave the PS pump in the truck. Behind the PS reservoir there is an almost hidden bolt on PS/alt bracket that looks impossible. After removing the PS pulley just remove the PS bolts and the pump will drop down a bit allowing access.

Basically I do it backwards from Dave. I strip the motor -then- pull it. (All except the lower intake which I lift from.)

Have fun.

If I lived closer to Dave P I would !! He always gives me great information along with
DonW. If I want to learn something I need to do it myself. I can't book learn for crap.
Thanks guys for the input. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Re: Engine removal

What Dave and Don said are both good methods (the parts have to be removed from the motor at some point, so doing it in or out of the vehicle is up to you), plus I like to remove the front grill and bumper, just to get it out of the way (in case the lift goes wild and hits it). I also like to use Chug's idea and loosen the 2 front and 2 mid body mount bolts, so the body can be raised a little to allow more clearance for the trans housing bolts, which also gives more clearance for the motor mounts.

I pulled mine recently. All the bolts on the back of the heads, hanging on to the wiring and turbo oil feed got me. Make sure you get all of them.

Long ago I moved those ground wires on the back of the drivers side head to the last bolt on the intake. Much easier. The fuel lines support is different. It should be there IMHO. With the upper intake off and the dist out you can get to it.

Re: Engine removal

That is the 2 front body mount bolts I was referring too.

I"ve done this too. It allows the engine and transmission to be installed as a unit. It is also the only way to replace the stock motor mounts with the engine in the vehicle.

IF you lift the body off the frame, don't forget to remove the two core support bolts as well. If you don't, and lift the front of the body the fenders may get bent downwards. They bulge outwards at the rear of the wheel well opening. They don't go back, its permanent. I did this to my DD 15 years ago when I changed a motor mount.
