External Fuel Pump Suction

Guys,

I am ready to install a new Walbro 340 into my fuel tank, and I am not sure it will be enuf for my build. I noticed that Conley drills a hole in the existing FP hanger and installs a 3/8" copper line as an external pump suction line. I guess he either epoxies or brazes it to the hanger.

I thought I might as well do this while I have the tank down and hanger out. I will plug it off and only put in the external pump if I need to.

Has anyone else done this ? Any suggestions ?

Brian,

I would be perfectly happy w easy low 11's. I should have a package that will get there, and perhaps some potential beyond that. I have a Bowtie w ATR/McCoy Vortecs and reworked stock intake. Conley has recommended a fairly wild cam ~ 220/220, and I have Crane Gold 1.6's.

New stock crank w Eagles and 8.5 CR J&E Extreme Dutys. PTE DP pkg w a 63 turbo and ATR headers - DP & ATR Jet Hot coated. Still unsure of injectors - not sure 50's will be enuf to supply engine at say 18 lbs boost - so maybe 70-80's so I won't run out and get lean. A maxed out Mega Raptor 700-4R w a 3200 Stall 9/11.

All MSD ignition. Thinking about Speedpro or equivalent for this level.

Just a 63E?

75#ers with a hotwired walbro 340M will do. The bigger injectors allow a lower base pressure, to leave room for 25 psi of boost. Keeping the 340 under 60 psi does help alot in the gallon per hour rating.

There's a few of us that have this combo, so you'll have some help when you get FAST.

If you haven't got the PTE yet, I would highly recommend a 74 with Q trim. If we knew that we could get a Q trim in the SyTy housing, that would have been the choice. So we picked the 63E, as there isn't much need for anymore compressor on a puny Ptrim. The 72 is only rated 105 more HP over the 63E.

I did 126mph on a 63 at 22psi, FWIW.

Myself, I will never attempt 10 second passes with any intank pump, and certainly not a single Walbro. IMO, it's at it's limit at those levels, and their output is going to vary from pump to pump, as well as being very dependent on voltage.

50s are good to 600hp at the crank, or 500ish at the wheels. Mid-low 11s will be all you'd get out of 'em IMO.

Christian, Brian,

Some real good suggestions. The 76 # injectors sound good. Conley has a new Speedpro-type computer - Gen 7, I think - that we may look at. It seems that one of the major expenses of the FAST Speedpro is the ridiculous cost of the WB O2 -something like $700. or more.

And yet it looks like Nolan and the Canucks have come across the stock Civic WB that's only $200-300. that might be usable. I asked Lawrence to check into that.

I am considering a Fast type system because I may be able to use it between my 3 Turbo cars somehow, since I don't drive them all at the same time. I know - what does anyone need w 3 of these ? I can't give a good answer to that one, but some of U fellow crazies understand.

that stock civic WB is a NTK sensor and it is $110. and yes I've had my own setup with this sensor for 2yrs now. NTK, bosch, honda and cadillac all sell this sensor.

I have the FAST set up and the one that that is missing from your account of it.. the fact that the wideband is closed loop fed into the system. While they are using the WB for tuning, it is external to the system.

For someone like me, the WB makes a great way to tune without the complications of burning chips, etc. This is why I spent the money on it. Of course, Nolan and Tony have gone just as fast as anyone on a stock computer.. so I there is no reason to say that someone with a FAST will be faster, I just like the feedback of the WB and the datalogging, etc of the FAST.

There are some benefits to having the stand alone, but they are cost prohibitive for some builds.

The FAST system usually includes the wB02 for like 2000, and it's plug and play with the syty's. You can find good base calibrations anywhere for it as well. The DFI v7 doesn't really offer much of anything over the FAST IMO. Newer software/hardware with more bugs maybe? No base calibrations out there for syty's.

The DIY WB02 has to be created yourself - it can be done for cheap - but you have to have some skills to make anything out of the data you can get. You can't go out and purchase a $300 setup. The controller is a big part of the wideband 02 setup.

Also, IMO, the FAST closed loop is kinda retarded. I logged a lot with my truck (and still use it on various cars/trucks to this day). I get a lot further tuning just doing closed loop for the initial running, then go to open loop for the rest. It idles better, it usually drives better. There are a few instances where the closed loop helps, but IMO, it's not a matter of performance. I thought it was an amazing feature way back in the day, but have been disappointed by it after using it a *LOT*.

Doing chips isn't for everyone, definitely. A standalone allows for someone with FAST or DFI skills to tune any vehicle.

I've said it before - I still see no huge benefit of the Accel gen 7 yet; nothing that would make me abandon the stocker. After using the FAST system, and having the capabilities of wideband and large injectors on the stock setup - I won't use anything other than stock, or an AEM, if it would ever be available to me cheap & easy.
