Front end problems continue!!!

Hey guys, I got the truck back after having the tranny rebuilt. The tranny is great, better than what I was expecting. Total for the rebuild, including a new shift cable, and torque converter was $1100.

HOWEVER, I'm still having front end troubles. What I originally thought was a wheel hub bearing, turns out being either a steering shaft, or the steering box. After bringing it to the shop to have them check out and fix what was wrong, they found out it was the steering, and haven't given me a price. Well, After doing the shopping myself, GM don't make either the shaft OR the box anymore, and nobody knows where to get one. I would prefer to stay out of the bone yards for these, and stay new, for safety. Would anybody either have a shaft/box for sale, OR know where I can buy one new? So far, I've been told around $300 for a shaft, and not sure yet on the box. If anyone can help, it would greatly help, as usual.

Then, my other question was, how hard is it to take the old one out and get the new one in? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and have done altenators, starters, both oil line sets (block to filter, & filter to cooler) and various other things. What's the best way to get both out? Will be doing shaft first, hopeing just the joints are no good. Again, any insight will help. Thanks, Josh

Since you need it anyways, get a ZQ8 steering box. I had a bunch at one time that I was selling for $100 shipped, but I'm out. They were all used, and I got a good deal on them by buying a bunch from a yard. You can usually find a used ZQ8 for about $130 or so. As far as a steering shaft goes, get on the waiting list for Renz's shaft.

not renz's shaft again. another twisted thread begins. changing the gear box isn't bad as long as you get the pitman arm off easily. i would recomend a puller.

I found the shaft hard to remove with the steering box in. You shaft given that it has been driven year round maybe particularly hard to remove due to rust.

Not to sound sexual, but how much for the shaft? It's going in monday for the box. If I get it back and it's still #$&@ed up, I'll want the shaft. Give me a price, you can send it to me in an email. Oh yeah, aren't you the one who runs the NASTE webpage? If so, I haven't forgotten about the dues, just having more difficulty trying to keep the Ty running!!! Will also make a donation to syty.net when I finally become finacially stable again. Thanks again everyone, Josh
