Gas Tank Installation

Hey, this Ty gas tank is a bit of a PITA. I twisted a line getting it out. And it is not easy getting it back in. It finally dawned on me to use my AT jack w the flat plate on it to raise it back. It appears that it is Ty specific, as the manual shows none of the other trucks to have port injection.

However it looks really tough to get the 2 screw in connections in. U gotta raise it way up then U can barely get one arm in to try to get 2 screwed connections started and tightened. I don't think these lines disconnect anywhere forward of the tank, but that would sure make it easier. Anybody got any tips ?

before you put the tank back up screw some fittings onto those 2 lines:

6
14mm x1.50
Power Steering / Fuel Injection - O Ring Seal
991954
$7.33

6
16mm x1.50
Power Steering / Fuel Injection - O Ring Seal

then put some ss line on the ends to make it easier.

the larger one is for the pumpline and the smaller is the return.

these work throughtout the truck on the lines at ever connection including the fuel rail and filter and each and every hard line connection point.

I just used a few of these at the rail and for interupting the lines to interface an isolated fuel cell to run 2 systems.

Gas Line @ tank

Gas Line @ tank

Hey, Ed,

Brilliant ! - that's even better than sliced bread (probably dating myself)

So then U put in 1-2 Ft of #6 AN on each line so that U have enuf flex to lower the gas tank to the ground ? I would imagine that U will want to coil the AN a full turn.

Don't know if U read my .org post, but I have put an xtra 3/8" SS suction line thru the hanger going to an 8 AN line over to the fender. In case I want to add an external pump in the future.

lynn,

I wish i had done that when i put the walbro in, but doing a sy with a lift isnt so bad, i set the lift at just the right heigt and being a small person i could just get my body between the tank, driveshaft and with the tank down just enough i could work with the lines.

But i used this stuff from the 2 lines at the trannny braket to the rail and also to run from the same braket back to the bed to plumb in a seperate fuel cell. The larger of these 2 i used to add a stoke style filter after the cell pump.

actually nothing brilliant about it. I just remember this stuff after burning lots of bandwidth here gettin all my stuff lined up on the new motor. I thinkit was bg who gave me these numbers....

now if i only had a prom..... c'mon ups or fedex... sure hope bg sent it next day air.

forgot one thing..... ya know while your at it, just go thru the whole system, yank all the hard line out and just use AN and SS lines from front to back and be done with it. besides i think it looks cool :)

Gas Tank Lines

Gas Tank Lines

ed, et al.,

Yeh, AN line all the way would be nice but I don't need another project right now - I'm buried already rebuilding ~ the whole truck.

I just got the FP hanger lines attached by going in over the frame at the left fender w my Rt arm and then bringing the Left arm over the rear axle. It doesn't look like I will be able to get the strap connected that goes from the frame member just in back of the rear axle to the frame member in front of the bumper.

This strap goes under the lines that attach to the FP hanger and keeps the lines from coming down when U lower the tank - which I don't think we want. I think that's what caused me to twist and bend the FP hanger inlet fuel line coming out of the tank. I can't see that it serves any purpose - Anybody see anything wrong w leaving this strap out ? I guess I'll leave the one on the other side attached - Not sure what it's for ?

Now I gotta get the tank lined up to attach to the fill nozzle, and then attach the support straps. Sure hope the damned pump works - I don't want to drop this MF again.

use longer line from the pump side to the filter, the adpter no i gave you will mount to the filter.

run a longer return line to where the line goes from the frame to the mount at the drivers side rear of the tranny.

Ty Gas Tank

Ty Gas Tank

Finally got the MFing Tank in. My forearms R all scarred up. The strap under the inlet lines is a real bear. Some guys R thinking about cutting an opening in the back floor for future access. If I knew I was going to go in there a few more times, I would definitely consider that.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a procedure for this job so people R aware of all the pitfalls. This is why I put in another suction line in case I have to go w an additional pump.

Believe it or not, there is a tank that is worse - on the TTA. U gotta drop the Rear End and Exhaust to get it out.

Hmm... I was considering putting in my walboro this wknd... Maybe having the local shop do it would be worth my money!

One question... when you guys drop the tank down, is it completely free?? I was thinking while Im in there it would be a good time to clean it out and get that crap at the bottom that could cause problems.

yes you will be able ot have it completely on the ground.

However, this wont be like the last gas tank you looked into where you could see the crap in the bottom. Because there is a baffle in it which blocks your view of the bottom. But i guess you can still turn it over and try flushing any crud in it to come out.

i atempted to install a fuel pump on thursday... not done yet... i rip a line of the fuel sending unit and am waiting for a new one($200), and im doing it alone, on floor jacks, i didnt think it was that hard to get out, the lines were just rusted, thats the only problemi would have been done on thursday if everthing wasnt rusted. i would recomend that you have a local shop do it, that and you'll gain at least a second off the 1/4 after all that shit falls of the top of the tank.
PS i took the plastic shield off the load leveled POS and cleaned that off to, alot shit sits in that plastic shield
