Getting Parts Together for Engine Rebuild

Need some advice so I can make sure I'm not getting out of hand with parts for an engine rebuild. My Ty has picked up a rod knock when the engines warms up and tolerances increase. I want to do a rebuild with the main goal being reliability/mild performance gains. Budget is at or about $5k.

I'm planning on pulling the motor out with a buddy, would it be better to have the short block magnafluxed and if it's in good condition hone it and reuse it, or should I go with a reman block? I found this one for $750: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Remanufact...1987-1995-without-Balance-Shaft-/260696566977

I want to do forged internals, been looking into Eagle/Scat/TRW for pistons/rods, connecting rods, crankshaft/crankshaft bearings.

Also wouldn't mind picking up a set of L35 heads and a mild cam: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/crn-1439801/make/chevrolet

What other stuff am I missing? While the engine is out I'd like to replace belts, oil pump, obv gaskets etc. Is there anything else I'm missing? I've never rebuilt a motor before. I'm trying to make sure I don't screw anything up. I'll take all the advice I can get and if some of the things I've mentioned have been brought up ad nauseum before let me know and I'll search for it.

There would be no advantage of buying that short block since you'd have to pull it apart any way, since the pistons are neither forged or the correct compression ratio

That's a good point. Would it be better to just send my block to a machine shop and have them get the parts together too? I was quoted $3800 parts and labor from our local shop which seems pretty expensive.

That would depend on what they're doing and what they're using. You'd want good forged pistons and good H beam rods. Everything balanced. A good cam and lifters, with a HD timing chain and oil pump. You'll need the heads done over with springs to match the cam. I'm sure there's more. If they're using quality parts, and assembling it, I can see bill be that high.

Okay update: so I’m planning on disassembling the motor to bare block. Hoping I just need a hone given the low mileage on the engine. Once I have specs from the machine shop I’ll give Eagle a call and see if they can spec me Forged rods/pistons & rings unless there is a better or equivalent and more affordable option. Also intending to use the crane cam I linked earlier plus Crane 96802-12 valve springs. Also going to replace the oil pump and timing chain you mentioned. Also I’m hoping I can pick up a set of used L35 heads on here. Any other suggestions? What bearings would be best? Thanks for helping me out, I’ve been reading as many posts and watching as many YouTube videos as I can to learn about this. Hopefully I’m not overthinking it too much.

Does anyone know where to locate a service manual for a 1992 GMC Typhoon? I found a paperback copy for a 1993 on amazon but it’s $230. Is this how much they go for second hand?
