Got the motor appart today.......

We'll, I have a mess!! The motor spun the first, second and third main bearings. Havent been able to take the rear cap off but the result is probably the same. There is some pretty deep groves in both the crank and looks like in the block also (havent got the crank out yet). There was about 100+ small to large pieces of bearing all over the motor, from the oil pan up to the lifter bores (wich are damaged also). I have not taken the rod caps off yet but I don't believe thee is damage there. Buy the looks of it, I don't think either the block or crank are salvageable.

Well, I guess that is what you get when the motor is run to damn near 30 psi on stock internals. It is strange though that the heads, pistons, cylinder bores and rods (from the loks of them, havent got them out yet) were not damaged at all. The bores still have he cross hatching and the tops of the pistons look almost new.

Wich makes me wonder.........if the motor is the stocker, I don't think it is.

The valve cover on the passanger side has a sticker that says: NEW GM 4.3.
I wonder if this is one of thoes GM motors with the mix match of parts in them. Is there really anything that sets them appart? It is kind of a mute point at this stage but it would be nice to know.

Anyway, I guess I have a good anchor for the boat....

OK, couple of questions.......

#1. I noticed in peoples engine pics that they all have a big stamped metal lifter retainer that bolts in the center of the valley. Is this what is supposed to be there??

The reason I ask is because my motor has these 2 plastic pieces that are bolted on top of the lifters on either side of the motor. I read somewhear that this was not a feature that was not introduced until 94 ish.

#2.Is there supposed to be a "N" stamped on the caps? I read in a post that this differentiated the regular caps from the SyTy ones.

My motor dose not have this stamp on the caps.

#3.What numbers should a compression show??

I did a compression check before I took out the motor and I had basicly 160psi on all cylinders. I was just curious if this was in the ball park range of a SyTy motor.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a balance shaft motor in your truck. The non-balance 4.3 had a stamped steel retainer that bolted in the center. The balance shaft motors have the plastic retainers like you described.

Yes, SyTy caps have an N cast into them which stands for Nodular iron. No "N" means they are standard cast caps.

Sounds like you have a non-SyTy motor in your truck and its a balance shaft motor as well.

That is the wierd part, it is definately not a balance shaft motor.

Brian
can you take pics??

its definately not a SyTy motor either, cause all the SyTy motors ive seen dont even have the bosses in the block to bolt in those plastic retainers.

FWIW I've seen plenty of the motors with those plastic lifter retainers and no balance shaft.

I've even seen plastic retainers a metal not plastic oblong timing chain cover and no balance shaft. Most balance shaft motors have the plastic timing chain cover.

I've also seen metal timing chain cover and a balance shaft.

If it could be thrown together GM did it.
