Help with dtc 42

Just got my Ty back together from a fresh rebuild and it threw a code 42 and 45. 42 is (EST) Electronic Spark Timing Problem and 45 is Rich Exhaust. I know code 45 popped up because of code 42. Plugs are all fouled and exhaust smells like gas. Running very rich and dies out when more than quarter throttle is depressed.

Would like to know your guy's experience with code 42 and what you have found, and how you have delt with it? What parts did you have to change to solve your situation?

Just trying to get some idea's on where to start to tackle it. Did a search on code 42 but didnt find very much. Your help and experience is appreciated.

Re: Help with dtc 42

Ty is completely stock. No performance upgrades at all. I have a set of new 30 lbs red top injectors from a Mustang that i never used and put them on the TY. I didn't check the # 's on them but they plugged right in just like the stock ones. I dont think that messed anything up but im going to check the numbers on them just to make sure they are exactly the same.

Stock ECU and i belive stock chip but i will pull it and double check

Any idea's?

Re: Help with dtc 42

If I remember correctly and could be wrong on this one. Code 42 comes in when you have had the wire disconnected under the passenger side under the dash to set timing. If you just set the timing for your new build this could be the cause of this code. Also could be ignition module.

On code 45 my first suspect would be o2 sensor.

Ford red top injectors are not the same as syty red top injectors. you need to re-tune your ecm to use those.

The ford red top injectors are 30lb injectors, don't remember there impedance.

Are syty red top injectors 30lb? High or low impedance?

Syty injectors are high imp & 32#/hour flow.
I would check the fuel pressure, vacuum lines, O2 sensor & make sure knock sensor is hooked up/working.

Re: Help with dtc 42

Timing is set to "0" and fuel pressure is set to 43 psi on an adjustable regulater with line unplugged.

Knock sensor is brand new and plugged in.

Ford red tops are 30lb and think that may be an issue.

Check the O2 sensor also.
Easiest way to check the injectors w/o removal is to get the part# off of them, research that # & test with an ohm meter.

Re: Help with dtc 42

I dont know If the injectors are hi-impedence or low impedence

I know when I ohm mine They were like 12 or 15 ohm something in that range.

Red top injectors could be a different Type. I know OEM red tops are Bosch.

Un plug Fuses to clear any stored Memory . Disconnect battery. Un plug fuses

That is Just a start. Than follow jays post and take it step by step. I am sure You will figure it out.

Re: Help with dtc 42

Both injectors i have are Bosh.

The ones the Ty came with when i got it are part# 0280150756

The ones i installed are # 0280150945, these are the Ford red top 30lb injectors

Im going to swap the stock ones back in and see if it solves my problem and will report back. hope it works!
