Im checking for wich turbo i wanna put in. And now i need the airflow of the stock syty engine to check the flowmaps......

Can sombody help me?

Maybe someone knows also the airflow with vortec heads on it... But i think the "endflow" of the engine will be almoste the same!?!?

Re: how many lb/min ariflow got the syty-engine?

if you search there is a couple of threads on the flow of lb4(stock) and vortec heads. i remember the vortecs outflowed the lb4 by a pretty healthy margin.

search for Tooky's thread - vortec head swap - it's an awesome write up and has flow numbers in there.

www.powertuneplus.com has a lot of info...

I think the vortecs were flowing around 260 cfm intake

Nice to see someone doing the science to get their turbo right :)

Having said that, there are some well proven combinations that people have used successfuly - might be worth asking for people's experience rather than going the hard route? Either way, you'll find what you need on this site :)

i seriously doubt the vortecs would flow 260 without some major porting

Just because a head flows X amount doesn't mean the motor will, and you can size a turbo off that.

Actually most turbo flow calculations don't even factor in a good flowing -vs- poor flowing head.

In the elusive Car Craft Vortec porting article (which has been basically deleted by mistake; the website only shows the first paragraph and photo out of a series that used to be 15 photos.), they measured the following flow increases with a port job similar to mine but a little better (they opened the pushrod pinch, etc.)

Notice the negligible gains on the intake, and the gigantic gains on the exhaust. Here's what their exhaust port looks like:

Porting Tips
It's the hardest area to reach because you have to reach so far in, yet be careful not to bump the grinder on the valve seat. My new 6" burr exposes the major flaw in the Harbor Freight $40 die grinder - it makes it wobble so bad as to be totally unusable (and dangerous). I cut 2" off the shank and it got better, and I used it on a low speed setting. It sucked, and I encourage anyone doing this to find a small radius burr (1/4"-3/8" max, mine was somewhere around 3/8" or maybe a little bigger). I had to carefully use one of my other 2" burrs to come in from the top which was next to impossible with such a short length.

By mistake, I also hit the top edges of the valve guide boss on several ports. However I dont think this really matters because on race heads they heavily grind down the valve guide. If you want to see an amazing small block race head that flows 450cfm, check this out.

My bad - thought it was higher - looks like around 220 stock and maybe 240 very well ported...

Re: how many lb/min ariflow got the syty-engine?

I dont need the flowrate of the heads. I need the flow woch the engine puts out on rpm-X, and boost-X.
With my flow calculator on the computer i get 700cfm or 48lb/min (4300ccm, 4400rpm, 1.5bar of boost, 75%efficiency of the turbo) OR 603cfm or 41,5lb/min. (all datas the same, exept the boost is stock 1.00bar)
That is how i check witch turbocharger fits really on the engine, and with that i can watch how laggy or how much top-power i can get.

BUT: The calculation is for a (i dont find the right eglish words sorry) good engine with good flow on the heads and everything, actually for a 24valve 6cyl. engine. My cfm and lb/min results can be diffrent when i know how much flow engine really got!
I was thinking maybe sombody have the same calculation but with other results.....

On the link there is a flowmap from a turbo. On the bottom line there is the lb/min. skala. with my calculation i know where the engine stands and how effective the turbo will flow air on how much boost in to the engine.

Only with that you can really chose the right turbo for the right engine.
