How much should a good paint job cost?

I live in south Fl(Miami) and when I bought my ty, the prior owner :tdown: did point out a small imperfection out the paint job the Ty has. Yeah if you consider the whole paint job a small imperfection. It was painted silver from black. The cladding was not removed, rust spots were painted over and there is rust stains coming true the paint. :rant: So I would like to have the truck repainted. I would like to take it apart my self, would I save money doing this and is it worth it?

Also would like to maybe strip the paint, would I save money doing this and is it worth it?

I always did all the work on my jeep, but that like working on legos and my ty feels like an erector set and I am only 2 years old..

So what do you think pay some one to do everything or do some of it.
Oh and if you know of a good shop in south FL please let me know. :tup: :tup:

Low end $3,000 on up to $8-10,000.

That is for one that is decent to great.

Keep in mind all paint jobs have defects, your paying more for less defects. 99% is prep work.

Paint supplies now will cost 1000-1500 just for the paint (if you buy good stuff), so keep that in mind also.

Doing the work yourself is going to save you money in labor, but only if you know what you are doing. I am painting my truck at my house and doing all the body work and so far everything is coming out looking good.

JS thanks for the info. :tup: in the prices you pu down, would that be the shop doing all of the work or me towing in a truck that has been taken apart.
JamerJoe good luck on your rig :tup: :tup: Are you removing the windows and cladding?
How did you go about preping the surface, did you strip the paint or sanded it?

what quality of work do you want? My painter will not paint a vehicle for under 10,000 and that you bringing the truck ready to shoot, you can get 3k jobs but you get what you pay for

Man, I can't get over some of these prices!:roll: I have had 3 different trucks painted by a guy I know and he does excellent work! (including the one in my avatar) Granted its not "best of show" quality, but very good work none the less. And all 3 jobs he has done have been between 1,800-2,500 including minor body work..

I know of another customization shop by me that supposedly does "show quality" work and i've heard they run about $5k for their paint work.

Maybe find a way to contact Caleb, he lives here in Illinois, he use to own the truck that Matt "420" owns now, it has the flames on it.

He does a pretty good job painting and maybe you will be able to get some sort of deal since he is a big syty fan.

Man i wishi liced up north again, lots of resourses up there, but i live in Miami FL. well thanks for the input. spoke with a shop and they want $4500 but they will take it apart and put it back together.. little to much.. I would love a show quality paint job but a good factory color would be great. Not all of us need show truck i just want a good looking DD.

Heck I know one painter its 25k for him to show up, then again paint 2 cars that have one the riddler and you can charge that. Figure paint labor is 35 per hour. to paint cut and buff our trucks is probably 4-500 hours, to paint it right. cladding off, door jambs, firewall, inside and outside of bed then put2k for quality materials and it adds up fast

Okay i think i made it clear that i do not want a show car quality paint job. I will not be entering any shows. It is so cool that you know a guy that has painted award winning rides. I know a guy that builds them, i see him every Tuesday night on TLC :rotf: :rotf:

But thanks for the info guys, I think I want to take it apart and and have some one paint it and the parts. But i will wait for my new house to be done. I paid extra for a 3 car garage to have space for a truck that i can take apart.so it give me time to save up and maybe drop 4K on a half ass job for my daily drive

I used to work for a parts store and know that the right supplies can get expensive. I will more then likly take apart the truck but not sure if i will pull the engine. Or should I

Tuff call on pulling the engine. If you aren't doing a color change and there really isn't any rust on your firewall then skip it.

If your truck has always lived in Florida then you may want to look for hidden rust.

side note - painting the core support and inner fenders goes a long way when you open the hood. You can even have them powder coated which will save you some money

Contact Gary and see if he has any place he you can direct you to. I know he had his white ty painted when he brought it back to life... He has lots of contacts in the car field.
