Like the title says. How much to rebuild a stock turbo?

I was looking into having a stock turbo rebuilt by a local shop.
The guy quoted me $500. I thought that was really high for what he was going to do to it.

1) have the shaft re ground.
2) Re machine the housing.
3) install new over sized bearings and seals.
4) have it balanced.
5) put it back together.

What do you think. Is the guy smoking crack? Or is this the new price of having a turbo rebuilt.

He's smoking crack. Conventional crack mixed with green crack.

IIRC, mine cost like $160 or so. I can check the receipt when I get home.

If you don't mind shipping it out, hit up jeff at TurboAuto.biz. He knows his shit and is very good.

That's about right for a shop to do all the work for you. If you just over haul it, about a 1/3 of that price. If they are machining the houseing and a few other extras, loko at shop rate. Most are around the 8- 100 a hour plus parts and enviro fees.

If you are needing a turbine wheel, might as well do an upgrade to the 9 bladed unit.

With a larger better breathing turbine wheel, your mid range & top end will increase (something a stock turbo lacks) & will spool just great w/your stock 8 CM turbine housing.:2cents:

It should cost about $100.00 to machine your turbine housing larger to fit the turbine wheel.

Just a suggestion.

That's about the right price for the amount of work you listed.

It really depends on the condition of your turbo. Text me your number and I'll have my buddy get you a quote: 559 dash 393 dash 3258

Re: How much to rebuild a stock turbo?

I had my stock turbo rebuilt at turbo auto in Nashville where TNPHOON was talking about.
That was about 4 years ago. It was 450.00 and I think that included a new wheel also.

Re: How much to rebuild a stock turbo?

It all depends on what needs to be done to it, what's actually damaged.

You could be looking at really cheap for just a cleaning and re-bearing to quite expensive for new wheels installed. I would say that a "good" shop would tear it down, and at a minimum re-bearing and clean it, typically that is ~$250 to start.

I have no idea where South Bay is, but if you're reasonable close to Texas I would suggest Forced Performance.

Re: How much to rebuild a stock turbo?

I sent my turbos to Sportmachines. Yes Turbos. 3 to be exact. 1 was not worth the shipping weight and Tom agreed. Tom was more than helpful. He rebuilt the other two and they are on there way home now. I cant wait to start driving my Ty. My cost of Shipping only. round trip to Sportmachines would have been around $250 if I sent the turbos complete with the Exhaust housing. But... By getting creative with my shipping box and removing the Exhaust housing from the turbo. Shipping, round trip cost around $100. :) My total cost on 2 turbos rebuilt, plus 1 wheel and shipping from Sportmachines ended up saving me around $250. from having the local guy do them.

Thank you guys again.

And if anyone needs a turbo shipping box. I now have an extra.

Jays packaging was very impressive. We get a lot of stuff sent to us, and most times when things arrive it amazing that the parts survived, this was a work of art and no way anything was getting damaged.

Happy to work with you and get the turbos worked up. For those that are curious heres what we charge for rebuilds with a good starting core turbo, using genuine Mitsubishi parts:

Stock rebuild - $250 - clean everything to like new, polish shaft, new internals and assembly

Rebuild with billet wheel upgrade - $650

Rebuild, BMW upgrade, and porting - $750

Thanks for the support and kind words!

How does the average garage person tell if a turbo is worth rebuilding? I picked up a spare turbo cheap that I am thinking about sending out for rebuild but would like to check and make sure it is worth rebuilding before I ship.

Do you use Mitsubishi rebuild kits? My turbo guy/friend, the cheapest he can get a real Mitsubishi rebuild kit is $125. That's half of your price for just a rebuild.
