The rotary switch in the HVAC control is probably broken. VERY common problem in s-series as they age. Remove the two screws under the bottom of the HVAC controller and pull it out carefully. You will see a plastic rotary switch that has a bunch of different colored vacuum lines going into the back of it. On the rotary switch, there is a star shaped spring that is held in place with a plastic clip in the center. The clip gets brittle and breaks. If that is the cause of your problem, these pieces will be laying under the controller or directly behind it by the little "wall" that is molded into the cluster... You will see a slider that selects the various positions when the wheel on the rotary switch is moved. The busted clip will keep it from changing the position. Fixed this problem on my bud's truck with a small bolt, nut and washer combo by pinching everything back together (it will take a small fastener if you decide to try and fix it rather than replace it).
