I swear

removing the front dif on my truck has got to be the hardest thing there is, It's out so I can have a nice roomy area to pull the pan and check the bearings. But jeez what a PITA. I don't know if it's my truck or what but that thing does not like to come out of there and yes, I've had it out twice before. No easier this time.

Anyway, this time, since it's out, I'm gonna split the thing, check the gears and bearings and replace all seals etc resetting the pinion in the process.

Thanks for listening and you can throw any hints, barbs, and any other snide remarks you like as long as you also agree to come help put it back...

I'm waiting for the day, you're not making it easier knowing how hard the process is going to be.

Re: I swear

You want to work on the diff, so you had to take it out.

But you don't have to take the diff out to remove the oil pan.

Dave,

I actually saw you (I think it was you) send this to someone else recently and I considered it. With all due respect, I decided I wanted the room. Even though it was a pain, as I check the engine bearings with relative ease I will feel better about it. The bearing check and seal job on the front dif will be a side benefit. Thanks for the post.

It's not just your truck. It's a pain every time. It goes in a little easier though, in my experience.

Re: I swear

If you cut the lower mounting brackets off the frame it makes it a ton easier to take out, just weld them back on once its back up in there :2cents:

Last time I had mine out it came out easily. But went back in harder than the first time. From what I cn see, there is a very ultra slim window that you need to be at just the right angle to get these things out. Unfortunately, I have failed twice to discover this angle.

I actually did that the last time I had it out. I removed the bracket that is by the yoke. Helps quite a bit actually. I avoided that this time because there is a Gilbert yoke there but just barely.

The more I work on these trucks, the more I realize that there was ZERO forethought on the part of GM about FUTURE repairs/work.

Everything that needs to be done ends up being a damn Rubik's cube. Remove this to get to that...but remove this first to remove that. :banghead:

I'm sure dealer mechanics whinced every time someone brought one of these in. The bay is SO DAMN TIGHT you need midget (er...small people) hands to get ANYwhere. They should have just put a damn V8 or GN engine in the thing.

In short Don, I feel your pain...all over my knuckles and arms today.
