ignition timing

I am familiar with the 3.8buick motors and there distributorless ignition- but after a little reasearch on the 4.3's I see that they have a distributor

My question is do the 4.3's have a knock sensor and are able to cut back on timing if detination is present? I am intrested in a syclone and am trying to find out how strong the engines are, and if detination is as big a killer in the 4.3's as it is in the 3.8's. Are the chips avaliable able to change the timing, or is it up to you adjusting the distributor?

Also- What were the syclones stock 1/4 mile time, and how fast can you go without any dirve train problems?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

i believe plenty of guys are into the 10s on stock transfer case and axles. trannys are a big problem when you get into larger hp #s. The trucks do have a knock sensor and they start to pull timing when it starts knocking. there are many chips available, the ultimate is a good choice from what i read. stay away from the kenny bell "kaboom" chip. stock 1/4 mile on a good tuned truck is mid 13s.

These trucks will dip into the low 13's high 12's with good tuning and a few "basic mods"
For starters, a upgraded fuel pump, AFPR, IC mods, Chip etc.

Sytys have a knock sensor and can pull timing out (to a point).
The engines are ok if you run 20psi or less IMO.
Detonation is a huge killer but unlike the buicks we dont spit out head gaskets but the rods bend.
Chips are available but not as varied as the buicks (Ultimate is good).
The drive train is decent but the trans will come apart sooner or later even at stock levels and lotsa ppl have busted the front drive shaft.

These trucks arent as rock solid as the buicks but can be made somewhat reliable with the right amount of tinkering and careful parts selection. It doesnt hurt to have deep pockets either (or work a LOT of overtime  ).
