Finally decided to get the propshaft fixed up. I've been driving on it like this for at least 20,000 miles, and all the recent propshaft horror stories finally convinced me...

I followed the guide at http://www.techweasel.com/articles/syty/propshaft.htm and it was a piece of cake. I had it done within an hour of getting home from NAPA. Here is the entire collection of tools I used. The hammer and punch were just used to mark the ends of the shaft and the front diff and transfer case. Don't know if it matters, but I figure it's a lot easier to know exactly how it was than to have to try and figure it out later. I had to use two jacks due to lack of lift height and poor planning. =) Jackstands, ratchet, and E12 and E14 sockets finish up the list.

I think I may have found an even easier way to do it too. Instead of wedging the front of the shaft up to get at the bottom bolts in the rear, let the front hang down and go for the bolt on top.

Here's a shot looking straight up from below. The front of the truck would be at the bottom of the pic, and the rear at the top. You can see the extension and black torx socket along the left side of the joint.

Here's a shot of the same thing from the front. If you just let the joint hang down, you've got a clear shot at that top bolt closest to the driver side. The only real downside is that you have to do the bolts one at a time, with a 1/4 rotation in between (instead of two at a time).

Took it down the road for a quick run to make sure I didn't screw anything up, and it seemed smoother. Would front differential problems disappear also, or does this guarantee that it's the propshaft?

Your front diff is still spinning but not with the trans case. From the looks of your pics a new one should be the cure.

What I believe to occur (I could be 100% wrong) is that given with time, age, and use the front prophaft loosens up ... How much it does so depends are your driving and treatment of the shaft... However, what this slop/play means is a translation in vibration at higher RPMs due to the fact that the joints are not tight and focussing the energy forward/backward, but rather in an up/down fashion; pulling the shaft out from center while rotating... This in turn transmits vibration to the transfer case and the front differential which can only release the vibration through the mounts and onto the frame...

Over the last 2 years I've replaced my control arm, leaf spring, sway bar, bushings.. added a rear sway bar.. I've replaced all four shocks, put in a new front differential due to a leaky seal which I believe was the result of the vibration from the front propshaft... I'm willing to bet the slop in my front propshaft was the cause of the seal failure on the front differential after an extended period of driving with a vibration... So to answer your question would the differential problems dissapear?? Not sure what you mean exactly, but I believe that with less vibration emminating from the prophaft this would allow the front differential more opportunity to work without fending off vibration from the propshaft.. making for a smoother flow of the parts in motion...

We'll find out for sure when I decide on a replacement unit from either brandon or Al dustan...

With the front being an open differential, I wasn't sure if everything inside was still spinning like it would be if the propshaft was still in. I was wondering if it guaranteed that my problems were propshaft-related if they went away when the shaft was taken out. Or if problems in the front diff might go away too once the shaft was taken out, since it isn't under power anymore. That's what I meant by the problems disappearing - the stuff would still be broken, you just wouldn't notice it without the propshaft in place.

For those of you who are keeping track, my front joint was all nasty as you can see. But the rear joint and the shaft in whole seemed to have little to no play in it. Everything seemed pretty tight to my newbie eyes...

I'm having a place in Toledo put a regular U-joint on the front or rebuild the stock canister CV joint, depending on how much it'll cost. kwick6 had his rebuilt there and said it was cheap and only took them a few hours. The service manager told me he would probably get my shaft done and sent back out the same day UPS got it to him... I'll post more details once everything's done.

KGB PILOT recently had his break on him. I gotta tell you it sure is fun when you punch the gas w/ only rear wheel drive...We raced a 91 Talon TSi from a dead stop, spun for about 15 feet and by that time the talon was a lenght ahead, stayed that way. Josh got pissed and we went to his house and pulled the prop shaft and Bigger tires off the Typhoon. Went back and handed his ass to him! 15-20 lenghts up to 100

thats funny, most people say they run slower times when they pull the propshaft, and to pull that much from changing tires and going rwd?? man, was his propshaft made of solid lead?lol. tsi awd's are fun. btw

No we spun for like 10-15 feet, then he lifted and we went. When we had the propshaft and (Tires & wheels didnt matter, looked cooler) we did a hard launch, and raped him. I know that tires won't give you HP, But stickers will :p

tell me about it. some of the locals shed a few seconds of their 1/4 mile time using proven sticker combos. such as the "powered by H" in combination with the "Honda" banner. that is equal to some mad times. kinda like us doing a t72 qtrim with a dual ball bearing ceramic coated centersection. haha. actually, throw in a "Nito" watch the spelling, sticker that about evens it out. imagine us with a huge typhoon, syclone, banner. imagine the gains. lol. i know there are some with the banners, and i am not flaming, just messing. actually, where do you all get them from?

I have a replacement propshaft in my truck and found out today the metal ring retainer that holds the boot to the shaft is just swinging in the breeze.
Big blobs of grease decorate my trans pan and the crossmember has a nice thick chunky layer on it too. :evil:

So what shop is it that does the rebuilds at a reasonable cost?
I'd rather just have mine rebuilt than buy a whole new one.

So InvisiBill, what shaft did you decide to go with. Or did you elect to rebuild the stock shaft. If you did decide to go with a new one, how much did it run ya.

yeah, what did you decide to go with? im STILL!!!! in the same boat i was in a few weeks ago, no propshaft :cry:, slow ass rear wheel drive. BTW my shaft looked the same as above, end of the boot missing, wonderful green blobs of grease everywhere.....

It's Lay's Transmission, 378 Phillips Ave, Toledo OH 43612, 419-476-4088. kwick6 took his there and said it only took a few hours and was like $60. I was going to have him and AJ help me pull mine and take it down there, but I'm only in the area on weekends when that place isn't open. I called and talked to the service manager. As expected, he had no clue about SyTy's, but did know his driveshaft stuff. I would like to go with a regular U-joint and never have to worry about this stupid boot stuff again. He immediately asked why I wanted to get rid of the stock CV, and explained some of why different style joints are used. He was quite helpful to little old clueless me.

For what it's worth, I emailed Dynotech about doing the same thing, since they're even closer to me. They said that they weren't able to put a regular joint on the stock shaft. My options were either to buy the new one or get the stock-style rebuild for ~$200 in 2-3 days. I replied that other owners had local shops do it, and that I just thought I'd check with them since they have SyTy experience and are just as close. He emailed me back saying that he thought I might be confused about what they can do, and repeated the two options from the first email. I tried calling, but only got his voicemail. Overall, not very impressed with them, though they're probably not too concerned about one little person anyway.

My shaft got to Lay's on Friday, but I didn't get a call about it. Hopefully they'll call tomorrow. If there's interest in it, I'll try to get a specific cost for a front joint rebuild or replacement, so you guys can just send yours to them without having to explain to them what you have and what you want... Like I said, I'll be sure to post followup details, including pics of their work and any especially good or bad comments.

They just called. $250 to replace the front joint with a regular style U-joint, and $350 to rebuild the back joint and balance everything too. If you guys want your front joint replaced, just send it to them with a note saying it's from a 91-93 GMC Syclone/Typhoon, and you were told you could have the joint swapped for $250...

It's starting to get close to the cost of one of the new shafts, but I think the $250 for the U-joint is a better deal than Dynotech's $200 stock rebuild. Someone stated that most of the problems come from improper care, but that boot seems to be a constant source of problems (notice that most of the replacements get rid of it). I'd rather have a one time solution, than just repairing broken parts every time without fixing the situation. But I'm just a dumb newbie, so don't listen too closely to what I say. =)

Looks a lot like Keith's NAPA shaft now... Much smoother than it was before. Overall I'm pretty happy with. When I called, he said they could probably do it the same day it got there in UPS and go back out the same day. It got there Friday, they did it Monday, and it got shipped out Tuesday. Still not bad, considering I had it back in the Sy within a week of taking it out...
