Re: installing starter on Ty
The shim is the adjustment method to make sure the teeth on the starter and the flywheel/flexplate mesh together properly. You need to fit the new starter with and then without the shim if required and check the gear mesh is right. I cant remember off the top of my head what the exact clearance should be, but it should be in your manual, but you check it with a suitable size piece of wire slid between the two teeth when you slide the bendix into mesh. You dont want it too tight as it will be noisy when the starter engages (and can damage the flexplate teeth) and it can also cause the bendix not to disengage properly when the engine has started. Obviously you dont want the clearance too big either. If there is only one shim, it may not necessarily provide the correct clearance. You may have to either make some or buy some thinner ones. Its OK to stack them to obtain the correct shim pack thickness/clearance. I seem to remember one of those large paperclips being the right wire diameter to check it with. Sometimes you are just lucky with what you have, usually not though! I remember making some last time out of sheet metal. Its very straight forward once you look at it.
