Intermittent fuel pump

When I put the key in the on position, normally I would expect to hear the fuel pump whine for a couple seconds then go away. Yesterday I drove the truck in the morning. In the afternoon, it would not start. I noticed the fuel pump would not whine in the on position. I tried it several more times with simply going to the on position and but not starting the truck, on the 5th try, I could hear the pump and the truck started and drove fine.

When I got home, the truck didn't want to start again but this time ran but would not stay running. I let it sit for one hour and it ran fine again.

Is my pump relay going? Anything else I should be looking at?

There is a test plug near the dist. Put 12v into that and see what happens. Never done it but I believe the pump relay is right there (same as the AC relay). My bet it's the pump or possibly a bad ground. You could chase windmills here (hoping against hope it's -not- the pump) or change the pump. Next time it quits bang on the tank and see what happens. If it then runs you know it's the pump. :2cents:

Update.... I have not had any issues with the fuel pump except that one time. The truck running funny sporadically, I am attributing that to the different tunes I have been trying or my old spark plugs. I put my best tune back in and have had no issues.

I did change my plugs because it is cheap and I can now do it in less than 15 minutes. My gap was really tight on my old plugs. My plug gapper was worn out and what I thought was .028 on a new plug gapper was tighter than .020.

I had a similar problem with my SY that got worse and would shut off after 1/2 hour of driving...turned out my WALBRO 255 was taking a crap after only 2000 miles. It started exactly like yours was....It doesnt say if you have one or not in your post so I wasnt sure. I put a new stock unit in there and has been perfect ever since.

I apologize if I was a bit blunt with my first post here. Good that you are, at least for now, having no issues. Just wanted to add that I installed a Walbro a few years ago and not had ANY issues related to fuel flow or pressure. I have read here that there are some knock-offs that have failed early. Don't know the details.
