I'd wiggle the key in and out while turning the switch.Might be a shitty copy of the real key.

Sounds like you may have removed the key without the trans in park. Make sure you're in park, maybe move the shift lever around a bit. If in park will it come out of park? This almost happened to me. The linkage is sloppy.

I can move the shifter but it won't turn I think I did try n remove the key in the reverse position

Gotta love GMs, my GTO did this 3 times. All three times I was at least 40 miles from home.

One thing that helped a little bit was spray some silicone grease inside the ignition cylinder from time to time. AAA helps as well.

Replace the ignition tumblers. $20 at autozone. You have to remove the steering wheel, so buy or rent the lock-plate tool at the same time. Another $15.

I've had this happen to all my high mile S-series. It's the tumblers. They just lock up.

This the correct tool?

Did you try turning the steering wheel a little while trying to turn the key?

How many keys do you have on key ring?

Did you put the right key in?

I have two keys. One for doors and one for the ignition.

I don't remember if the door key works the ignition or not. For some reason I feel like I did this before but I am really not sure. Something to think about??

I also have one for the the doors and one for the ignition but I was upswing the right one, the door one is round and all metal the ignition one is squared and black plastic, so it's hard to get them confused I'm going to open her up tomorrow and see what's up

Just an old key cylinder or whatever they are called. Someone noted it up above. Go to the part store and get a new key and cylinder set.
