I am looking to do a turbo/intercooler setup on one of my blazers, nothing radical, just enough to boost my bottom end torque to help out hauling a boat. here is my truck situation:
i have 2 blazers currently. the first one is a 1991 4wd tahoe loaded with all the options, as it is i am leaning toward using this truck. the intake efi is going to be a commander efi multiport, with 6 injectors set into a CPI intake. i already have the intake machined for the injectors, along with the custom fuel rails. with any truck i use this is going to be my intake setup.
the second blazer is a 1994 2WD. 2 problems with this: its 2wd, besides the occasional rice smoking session, when i pull the boat up a dirt ramp, i am going to have no traction. I race my boat, and several of the ramps i put in at, i gotta have 4wd because they are dirt. second problem is, being a 1994, the transmission is a 4l60E, its harder to make work with a swap. the commander doesn't control the trans :roll: so, i would need to find another controller.
the third option is, i have found a 1992 bravada, and the dealer said he would trade me straight up for my 1994 2wd. But as you guys probably know, the bravada is a 4 door, it has more room, but doesnt handle quite as good. the longer wheelbase also hurts while trying to back a trailer up.
as for the drive type, i know the basic differences between awd and 4wd. but what happens when the front diff goes out on an awd? is it still safe to run 2wd only? the gas mileage of a awd is somewhat lower because of the 2 front wheels turning all the time? also, is the transmission is special in the awd? how is the durability of the awd compared to using the 4wd occasionally. will the cv joints of the 4wd handle the power when it is used? like i said, this is basically a daily driver for me, so my TT-WS6 can stay in the garage all the time
basically, i was thinking in my application the 4wd would be the best choice. when i am running around using this as a daily driver, its 2wd and gives better mileage, tire wear and all that stuff. if i get it in the slop, throw it in 4-high and go. Yes, i know running 4 high all the time will result in needing a new transfer case quick. also, from what i have read, the 4wd will work with the stock style downpipe?
Headers: i am leaning toward the atr headers, partially because i can only find the right side stock manifold (only &75 at discount) i cant find the left manifold or the crossover pipe. the main reason i like the atr, because the quality is awesome. anyone have any ideas for headers other than atrs or stock?
the exhaust is going to be 3" downpipe to back bumper, custom bent. I am lucky, i know the owner of a company that manufactures hydraulic CNC mandrel benders, so i can make my own parts for nothing.
Intake is going from the turbo, to intercooler,up the driver side of the radiator (where the stock CPI airbox usually is)and back across to the cpi intake manifold. the fan shroud is going to be gone, i am using a 2 electric fan setup, turning on and off controlled by the computer. that will free up some room for the aftercooler and the intake lines.
oiling system is going to be cooled by a 12" electric fan/mini oil cooler setup, they are like 140 each from summit, and i will be fitting 1 for oil, and one for the trans fluid. on the oil cooler should the cooler be mounted BEFORE the turbo, of after the turbo? or should i mount it somewhere totally different?
